The concept of a stem cell subpopulation as understood from normal epithelial tissue or bone marrow function has been extended to our understanding of cancer tissue and is now the target of treatment efforts specifically directed to this subpopulation. The hemodynamic and anti-ischemic effects of nitroglycerin (GTN) are rapidly blunted as a result of the development of nitrate tolerance. Long-term nitrate treatment also is associated with decreased vascular responsiveness caused by changes in intrinsic mechanisms of the tolerant vasculature itself. According to the oxidative stress concept, increased vascular superoxide and peroxynitrite production as well as an increased sensitivity to vasoconstrictors secondary to activation of protein kinase C as well as vascular NADPH oxidases contribute to the development of tolerance. Preferential localization of Lactococcus lactis cells entrapped in a caseinate/alginate phase separated system.

International audience; This study aimed to entrap bioprotective lactic acid bacteria in a sodium caseinate/sodium alginate aqueous two-phase system. Phase diagram at pH = 7 showed that sodium alginate and sodium caseinate were not miscible when their concentrations exceeded 1% (w/w) and 6% (w/w), respectively. The stability of the caseinate/alginate two-phase system was also checked at pH values of 6.0 and 5.5. Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis LAB3 cells were added in a 4% (w/w) caseinate/1.5% (w/w) alginate two-phase system at pH = 7. A series of novel dendritic steroidal polyesters of first and second generation has been synthesized in convergent fashion by the use of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid as a repeating unit. The first- and second-generation hydroxy-functionalized dendrons with a variety of surface modifications were produced through the use of four bile acids: lithocholic acid (LCA), ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), deoxycholic acid (DCA), and cholic acid (CA). Measuring the Relative Reactivity of the Carbon-Hydrogen Bonds of Alkanes as Nucleophiles

We report quantitative measurements of the relative reactivities of a series of C-H bonds of gaseous or liquid CnH2n+2 alkanes (n = 1-8, 29 different C-H bonds) towards insitu generated electrophiles (copper, silver, and rhodium carbenes), with methane as the reference. This strategy surpasses the drawback of previous model reactions of alkanes with strong electrophiles suffering from C-C cleavage processes, which precluded direct comparison of the relative reactivities of alkane C-H bonds.

Mo–V–Nb mixed oxides as catalysts in the selective oxidation of ethane

Abstract Mo–V–Nb–O mixed metal oxides, obtained by heat-treatment in N 2 at 425 °C, have been studied as catalysts in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. They present higher catalytic activity, while maintaining the same selectivity to ethylene, than the corresponding metal oxides calcined under air. Both amorphous and crystalline phases are present on active and selective catalysts. The implications of the presence of these phases as well as their physicochemical characteristics on the nature of active and selective sites are discussed.

On the influence of the acid-base character of catalysts on the oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes

Vanadium oxides supported on metal oxide, i.e. Al2O3, MgO and Mg-Al mixed oxide, and V-containing microporous materials (VAPO-5 and MgVAPO-5) have been tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation of C2-C4 alkanes. In all cases, tetrahedral vanadium species (isolated and/or associated) were mainly observed from51V-NMR and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies. The reducibility of V5+-species, determined from the onset-reduction temperature, decreases as follows: VOx/AL > VAPO-5 > MgVAPO-5 =VOx/MG > VOx/MG + AL.
