The role of extracellular polymeric substances on aerobic granulation with stepwise increase of salinity

Abstract A granular sequencing batch reactor (GSBR) worked for 164 days to study the effect of salinity on aerobic granulation. The feeding had an organic loading rate (OLR) of 1.6 kg COD⋅m −3 ⋅d −1 and a gradual increase of salinity (from 0.30 to 38 g NaCl − ⋅L −1 ) to promote a biological salt-adaptation. First aggregates (average diameter ≈ 0.4 mm) appeared after 14 days. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) analyses revealed that proteins were mainly higher than polysaccharides, and microorganisms metabolized EPSs as additional carbon source, mostly in feast phase, to face the energy demand for salinity adaptation. Effect of Stiffness on the Micellization Behavior of Model H4T4 Surfactant Chains

The micellization behavior of a series of model surfactants, all with four head and tail groups (H4T4) but with different degrees of chain stiffness, was studied using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations on a cubic lattice. The critical micelle concentration, micellar size, and thermodynamics of micellization were examined. In all cases investigated, the critical micelle concentration was found to increase with increasing temperature as observed for nonionic surfactants in apolar or slightly polar solvents. <p style="text-align: justify;">In this study, we have investigated the influence of ethanol on yeast film formation and cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH). A yeast strain (P3) previously isolated from film yeast was grown in a medium containing increasing ethanol concentration ranging from 0 to 14 p. cent (v/v). It results from this study that up to 10 p. cent ethanol, the greater was the ethanol concentration, the greater was the growth of film. Using two different techniques (phase partition method, magnobead assay), we have shown that ethanol altered the CSH of the yeast. Electroplated Ni/Ni-Co multilayer coatings for higher corrosion-erosion resistance

Erosion-corrosion behaviour of hierarchical structured hydrophobic nickel-cobalt coating, obtained by electrodeposition, was assessed. In situ electrochemical measurements were carried out to study the corrosion resistance and stability during erosion tests. The electrochemical behaviour was related to surface hydrophobicity and its hierarchical structure nature as well as its modification. The pure Ni showed the lowest erosion-corrosion resistance. A smoothing of the hierarchical structure and thus a reduction the hydrophobicity was highlighted.
