Control of brain temperature during experimental global ischemia in rats.

Temperature control during experimental ischemia continues to be of major interest. However, if exposure of brain tissue is necessary during the experiment, regional heat loss may occur even when the core temperature is maintained. Furthermore, valid non-invasive brain temperature monitoring is difficult in small rodents. This paper describes a method for both monitoring and maintenance of brain temperature during small animal preparations in a stereotaxic frame. The device used includes an ear-bar thermocouple probe and a small near-infrared radiator. Experiments in isolated cat hearts showed, that with increased Ca++-concentration of the perfusion-medium (0,56 g CaCl2/1000 ml) the onset of mechanical systole of left ventricle occurred earlier (21,9±3,3 msec after the onset ofQRS-complex in the ECG) than in experiments with a normal Ca++-concentration (0,28 g CaCl2/1000 ml). The onset of mechanical systole of the right ventricle was not effected.

Endogenous protective mechanisms may be responsible for the prevention of brain damage after hypothermic ischemia. Aim The adequate dosing of topiramate in neonates undergoing therapeutic hypothermia has not been established. The aim of this study was to design a dosing schedule capable of providing topiramate serum concentrations within the accepted therapeutic range. Whole body hypothermia can be used to treat the injured brain (e.g. after hypoxic events). Side effects include hemodynamic instability, coagulopathy and infection. Because of these side effects it appears reasonable to cool the brain selectively (selective brain cooling, SBC) without changing the core temperature. A new animal model was used to demonstrate SBC from the pharynx and to examine effects of SBC on the duration of pharmacologically induced seizure activity.
