Glutathione content of V79 cells in two- or three-dimensional culture

1997

The cellular glutathione (GSH) content of two- and three-dimensional cell cultures of V79 hamster lung cells has been studied. As previously described, cells in monolayer cultures show a decrease in GSH when they reach the confluent state. Three-dimensional cell cultures (multicell spheroids) allow a smoother transition from the initial proliferating to the nonproliferating status, and they show a central area of necrosis when a certain diameter is reached. Cellular GSH content in spheroids is variable throughout the culturing period: 1) GSH content (expressed per mg protein) is lower in spheroids with central necrotic areas than in smaller spheroids without necrosis, and 2) results expres…

Tannins from Hamamelis virginiana Bark Extract: Characterization and Improvement of the Antiviral Efficacy against Influenza A Virus and Human Papill…

2014

Antiviral activity has been demonstrated for different tannin-rich plant extracts. Since tannins of different classes and molecular weights are often found together in plant extracts and may differ in their antiviral activity, we have compared the effect against influenza A virus (IAV) of Hamamelis virginiana L. bark extract, fractions enriched in tannins of different molecular weights and individual tannins of defined structures, including pseudotannins. We demonstrate antiviral activity of the bark extract against different IAV strains, including the recently emerged H7N9, and show for the first time that a tannin-rich extract inhibits human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 infection. As the …

Forced Flowering in Mandarin Trees Under Phytotron Conditions

2019

[EN] Phytotron has been widely used to assess the effect of numerous parameters on the development of many species. However, less information is available on how to achieve fast profuse flowering in young fruit trees with this plant growth chamber. This study aimed to outline the design and performance of a fast clear methodology to force flowering in young mandarin trees (cv. Nova and cv. Clemenules) and to analyze the influence of induction intensity on inflorescence type. The combination of a short water stress period with simulated spring conditions (day 13 h, 22 °C, night 11 h, 12 °C) in the phytotron allowed flowers to be obtained only after 68-72 days from the time the experiment beg…

Quantum Monte-Carlo calculation of correlation functions of undistorted, cis-distorted and trans-distorted polyacene

2003

Abstract We have studied polyacene within the Hubbard model to explore the effect of electrons correlations on the bond–bond correlation as well as spin–spin correlation functions. We employ the determinantal quantum Monte-Carlo to resolve the microscopic Hamiltonian of this system which involves a nearest-neighbor electron hopping matrix element t , an on-site Coulomb repulsion U . The objective of this study is to understand the effect of electron–electron (e–e) correlations on the structural instability in polyacene. We find strong similarities between polyacene and polyacetylene. The system shows no tendency to destroy the imposed bond-alternation pattern. The spin–spin correlations sho…

Correlation of the Extent of Fjord-Region Oxidation with DNA Binding and Mutagenicity of the Enantiomeric 11,12-Dihydrodiols of Dibenzo[a,l]pyrene

1996

Abstract In vitro studies on the hepatic biotransformation of the enantiomeric trans-11,12-dihydrodiols of dibenzo[a,l]pyrene (DB[a,l]P) using microsomal fractions of animals pretreated with Aroclor 1254 revealed that the formation of fjord-region dihydrodiol epoxides strongly depends on the absolute configuration of the substrate. Both the (-)-11R,12R- and the (+)-11S,12S-enantiomer are converted diastereoselectively to the (-)- and (+)-anti-dihydrodiol epoxide, respectively, by either rat or mouse liver microsomes. Fjord-region oxidation occurs to greatest extent on incubation of the (-)-11R,12R-dihydrodiol with preparations from rats. This finding is in line with the differences seen for…

Sumatriptan Succinate Transdermal Delivery Systems for The Treatment of Migraine

2007

We have successfully obtained sumatriptan transdermal systems with different polymer compositions: methyl cellulose (MC), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixture. The systems contained 1,2-propylenglycol (MC) or sorbitol as a plasticizer (PVP and PVP-PVA), methacrylate copolymer as an adhesive agent, and an occlusive liner. Azone (5%, w/w) was incorporated into all the systems as a percutaneous enhancer. Transdermal systems are thin, transparent and non-adhesive when in a dry state. The permeation of sumatriptan succinate across pig ear skin was studied using the systems prepared. The formulation with MC polymer produced a statistically …

Infinite orbit depth and length of Melnikov functions

2019

Abstract In this paper we study polynomial Hamiltonian systems d F = 0 in the plane and their small perturbations: d F + ϵ ω = 0 . The first nonzero Melnikov function M μ = M μ ( F , γ , ω ) of the Poincare map along a loop γ of d F = 0 is given by an iterated integral [3] . In [7] , we bounded the length of the iterated integral M μ by a geometric number k = k ( F , γ ) which we call orbit depth. We conjectured that the bound is optimal. Here, we give a simple example of a Hamiltonian system F and its orbit γ having infinite orbit depth. If our conjecture is true, for this example there should exist deformations d F + ϵ ω with arbitrary high length first nonzero Melnikov function M μ along…

Darboux Linearization and Isochronous Centers with a Rational First Integral

1997

Abstract In this paper we study isochronous centers of polynomial systems. It is known that a center is isochronous if and only if it is linearizable. We introduce the notion of Darboux linearizability of a center and give an effective criterion for verifying Darboux linearizability. If a center is Darboux linearizable, the method produces a linearizing change of coordinates. Most of the known polynomial isochronous centers are Darboux linearizable. Moreover, using this criterion we find a new two-parameter family of cubic isochronous centers and give the linearizing changes of coordinates for centers belonging to that family. We also determine all Hamiltonian cubic systems which are Darbou…

Association of colony morphotypes with virulence, growth and resistance against protozoan predation in the fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare.

2014

Many opportunistic pathogens can alternate between inside- and outside-host environments during their life cycle. The opportunistic fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare is an inhabitant of the natural microbial community and causes significant yearly losses in aquaculture worldwide. The bacterium grows in varying colony morphotypes that are associated with either virulence (rhizoid type) or resistance to starvation and phages (rough type). Rough type strains can arise spontaneously or can be induced by phage infection. To identify the determinants of morphotype fitness, we measured virulence, growth parameters, biofilm-forming ability and resistance to amoeba and ciliate predation of both…
