Metamorphoses of Shamed Bodies : Sexual Violence in Euripides’s Helen

In this paper I explore the connections between shame and embodiment in Euripides’s play Helen. The paper focuses on the play’s underlying theme of sexual violence and rape, and on the descriptions of metamorphoses that the mythological female victims often undergo in the face of rape. In my analysis on shame and embodiment I apply two insights from Giorgio Agamben’s analysis of the phenomenon of victim shame in The Remnants of Auschwitz. These are, first, the definition according to which shame is “to be consigned to what cannot be assumed”—that is, to be consigned to one’s self, being and physical body—and second, the claim that in shame one is affected by one’s own (bodily) passivity. Abstract This article develops a new phenomenological analysis of the interpersonal motives and structure of shame. I pursue the argument that shame is rooted in our desire for social affirmation and conditioned by our ability to see ourselves as we appear to others. My central thesis is that shame is what we feel when, due to some trait or action of ours, we come to perceive ourselves as fundamentally despicable and non-affirmable. By showing how our urge for affirmation fuels and informs our self-perception in shame, the analysis provides a better understanding of the simultaneously interpersonal and personal character of shame. Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis as a late complication of chemotherapy agents

To the Editor: We identified six patients with clinical, radiographic and physiological features typical of pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE). In the six cases, PPFE may have been causally related to prior alkylating drugs used to treat malignacy, namely cyclophosphamide in five of the cases and carmustine (BCNU (1,3-bis-(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea)) in one. Based on an extensive review of the literature, we suspect that similar cases may have already been reported in the past 4 decades but have not been recognised either as PPFE or as drug-induced in nature. A 63-year-old woman experienced progressive respiratory distress and psoriatic plaques. The radiographic images showed diffuse interstitial infiltrates. The surgical open lung biopsy revealed an obliteration of the alveolar spaces by plugs of connective tissue distributed within the terminal bronchioles, alveolar ducts and spaces. No relevant cause was determined, and she was diagnosed with idiopathic organising pneumonia. The patient was discharged with oral glucocorticosteroid and supplemental oxygen therapy. Background: The quantity and intensity of physical activity required for the primary prevention of coronary heart disease remain unclear. Therefore, we examined the association between physical activity and coronary risk. Methods: We studied 100 patients with chest pain, 78 men and 22 women, not older than 65 years, admitted to a coronary care unit. Abstract OBJECTIVES The goal was to develop a scoring system to predict the 30-day mortality rate for patients undergoing surgery for acute type A aortic dissection on the basis of the German Registry for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection (GERAADA) data set and to provide a Web-based application for standard use. METHODS A total of 2537 patients enrolled in GERAADA who underwent surgery between 2006 and 2015 were analysed. Variable selection was performed using the R-package FAMoS. A simple method of bronchoprovocation using a valved holding chamber.

This study was undertaken to ascertain whether the use of a valved holding chamber (VHC) during bronchial provocation testing might increase lung deposition and repeatability of the test relative to the tidal breathing method. The 2-min tidal breathing results were compared to five inhalations from a VHC device in patients using the Pari-provoII nebulizer (MMD = 2.1mkm). Lung and mouth deposition, losses though the exhaled air and losses before aerosol delivery to the patient's mouth were measured in patients using a radiolabeled 99Tc-DTPA solution and gamma camera. Research Question Does a simple scoring system predict early major bleeding in acute PE patients, identifying patients with either high or low probability of early major bleeding? KNOTS AND LINKS IN INTEGRABLE HAMILTONIAN SYSTEMS

The main purpose of this paper is to prove that Bott integrable Hamiltonian flows and non-singular Morse-Smale flows are closely related. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of the knots and links formed by periodic orbits of Bott integrable Hamiltonians on the 3-sphere and on the solid torus. We also show that most of Fomenko's theory on the topology of the energy levels of Bott integrable Hamiltonians can be derived from Morgan's results on 3-manifolds that admit non-singular Morse-Smale flows.

AbstractIt is known that self-adjoint Hamiltonians with purely discrete eigenvalues can be written as (infinite) linear combination of mutually orthogonal projectors with eigenvalues as coefficients of the expansion. The projectors are defined by the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians. In some recent papers, this expansion has been extended to the case in which these eigenvectors form a Riesz basis or, more recently, a ${\mathcal{D}}$ D -quasi basis (Bagarello and Bellomonte in J.
