Microphones’ Directivity for the Localization of Sound Sources

In a recent paper [P. Rizzo, G. Bordoni, A. Marzani, and J. Vipperman, "Localization of Sound Sources by Means of Unidirectional Microphones, Meas. Sci. Tech., 20, 055202 (12pp), 2009] the proof-of-concept of an approach for the localization of acoustic sources was presented. The method relies on the use of unidirectional microphones and amplitude-based signals' features to extract information about the direction of the incoming sound. By intersecting the directions identified by a pair of microphones, the position of the emitting source can be identified. Bill2d - a software package for classical two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems

Abstract We present Bill2d , a modern and efficient C++ package for classical simulations of two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Bill2d can be used for various billiard and diffusion problems with one or more charged particles with interactions, different external potentials, an external magnetic field, periodic and open boundaries, etc. The software package can also calculate many key quantities in complex systems such as Poincare sections, survival probabilities, and diffusion coefficients. Management of Renal Angiomyolipoma: A Report of 14 Cases and Review of the Literature

14 patients with renal angiomyolipoma are presented. Two of them had tuberous sclerosis (TS) with synchronous bilateral and multiple tumors. Two other patients without TS also had multiple tumors in 1 kidney. More than half the patients were symptomatic (n = 8), 2 of them with spontaneous rupture of the tumor. Misdiagnosis, spontaneous rupture and tumor growth can be prevented by utilizing conservative, organ-sparing techniques. In cases of solitary kidneys with large and/or hemorrhagic angiomyolipoma, superselective arterial embolization is indicated.

Yttria-stabilized zirconia in-flight particle characteristics under vacuum plasma spray conditions

This paper deals with the diagnostic yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in-flight particles in Vacuum Plasma Spray (VPS) process using an optical measurement device. Particle velocity, temperature and diameter were correlated to spray distance under a fixed chamber pressure of about 14 kPa. Experiments were carried out with a two-color pyrometer. Results show that correlations can be satisfactory described with linear relationships. Particle velocity and temperature decrease when increasing spray distance whereas particle diameter exhibits a linear increase with the spray distance.

EMG amplitude of the biceps femoris during jumping compared to landing movements.

Abstract Hamstrings injury is a common occurrence in athletic performance. These injuries tend to occur during a deceleration or landing task suggesting the negative work may be a key component in hamstrings injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the muscular activity (EMG) of the biceps femoris (BF) in different phases (concentric vs. eccentric) of a Counter Movement Jump (CMJ), Squat Jump (SJ) and the Braking Phase (BP) of a landing task. New stage-discharge relationship for inclined non-rectangular weirs

Abstract In this paper, the outflow process of inclined non-rectangular weirs is studied applying the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. At first, a new stage-discharge equation, applicable for the non-rectangular weirs having a different geometrical shape (parabolic, semicircular, inverted semicircular), is theoretically deduced using a characteristic width. Monte-Carlo calculations are performed for the model Hamiltonian ℋ = ∑i[(r/2)Φ 2(i)+(u/4)/gF4(i)]+∑ (C/2)[Φ (i)−Φ(j)]2 for various values of the parametersr, u, C in the crossover region from the Ising limit (r→-∞,u+∞) to the displacive limit (r=0). The variableφ(i) is a scalar continuous spin variable which can lie in the range-∞<φ(i)<+∞, for each lattice site (i).φ(i) is a priori selected proportional to the single-site probability in our Monte Carlo algorithm. Weak pseudo-bosons

We show how the notion of {\em pseudo-bosons}, originally introduced as operators acting on some Hilbert space, can be extended to a distributional settings. In doing so, we are able to construct a rather general framework to deal with generalized eigenvectors of the multiplication and of the derivation operators. Connections with the quantum damped harmonic oscillator are also briefly considered.

Tridiagonality, supersymmetry and non self-adjoint Hamiltonians

In this paper we consider some aspects of tridiagonal, non self-adjoint, Hamiltonians and of their supersymmetric counterparts. In particular, the problem of factorization is discussed, and it is shown how the analysis of the eigenstates of these Hamiltonians produce interesting recursion formulas giving rise to biorthogonal families of vectors. Some examples are proposed, and a connection with bi-squeezed states is analyzed.
