Improved Cardiovascular and Cardiometabolic Risk in Patients With Type 1 Diabetes and Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome Switched From Glargine to Deg…
2018
Background: Cardiovascular disease is a frequent complication of type 1 diabetes (T1D). We evaluated the effectiveness of switching from glargine to degludec in reducing the cardiovascular risk factors, the Framingham risk score (FRS) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) in patients with T1D and autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS).Methods: We selected 66 T1D outpatients who had been on stable treatment with glargine for at least 5 years. Among them, 30 patients maintained glargine (group A), while 36 were switched to degludec (group B) for 12 months. At baseline and after 12 months of observation, clinical and metabolic parameters, insulin dose, 30-days blood glucose (BG) self monitoring,…
Carotid ultrasound is useful for the cardiovascular risk stratification in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa.
2018
INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease which has been associated with an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes. Adequate stratification of the CV risk is an issue of major importance in patients with HS. To analyze the usefulness of carotid ultrasound (US) assessment for the CV disease risk stratification compared with a traditional score, the Framingham risk score (FRS), in a series of patients with HS. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 60 patients with HS without history of CV events, diabetes mellitus or chronic kidney disease. Information on CV risk factors was collected and the FRS was calculated. Thus, the patients were…
Infections of susceptible and resistant mouse strains with herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2.
1980
The spread of HSV of type 1 and 2 was investigated after intraperitoneal, intraplantar and intracerebral infections of resistant (C57/bl) and susceptible (NMRI) mice. The virus spreads after i.p. infection to the spleen and the liver to the same extent in both strains of mice. However, virus is eliminated earlier in resistant mice. Intracerebral infections revealed a peculiar type of resistance of C57/bl mice especially for type 2 of HSV. HSV multiplies in the thymus at the early stage of infection and can be detected in this organ in sick mice of NMRI strain. HSV-1 and 2 can be detected in the spinal cord of C57/bl mice without sickness or death of these animals.
No relationship between baseline salivary alpha-amylase and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Score in drug-naïve patients with short-illness-duration fi…
2016
BACKGROUND Salivary α-amylase (sAA) activity alternations are observed in major depressive disorder (MDD) being associated with depression severity and its specific psychopathological dimensions with anxiety being attributed to distress. No data is available on sAA in MDD according to Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The exploratory study examines whether and to what extent baseline sAA level is interrelated to the psychopathological features including severity of symptoms and specific psychopathological dimensions. MATERIAL AND METHODS The basal, non-stimulated sAA activity was studied in 20 non-late-life adult, treatment-naive MDD pa…
Validity, Reliability, and Sensitivity to Change of DiCI for the Strength Measurement of Knee and Hip Muscles
2020
Many professionals use the handheld dynamometers (HHDs) to assess isometric strength. This study aimed to evaluate the validity, reliability, and sensitivity to change of a DiCI (a new HHD) for the...
Hautknoten und Ulzera der Extremitäten bei einem Patienten mit rheumatoider Arthritis
2002
CASE HISTORY: While being treated with corticosteroids and methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, a 63-year-old man developed livid nodules on his lower arms, hands and feet, as well as fever, necrotizing skin ulcers and rupture of a finger extensor tendon. INVESTIGATIONS: No vasculitis was found in a biopsy of one of the nodules on the lower arm. Fast growing mycobacteria, classified as M. marinum by PCR, were cultured from wound swabs. TREATMENT AND COURSE: The lesions healed on administration of ciprofloxacin, ethambutol and clarithromycin as well as local treatment. CONCLUSION: Cutaneous lesions of an atypical mycobacterial infection are often misdiagnosed. This is especially so in immu…
Activation and torque deficits in ACL-reconstructed patients 4 months post-operative
2001
This study compares knee extension and flexion torques and electromyographic (EMG) activity of normal and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-reconstructed knees during maximal unilateral isometric and isokinetic tests performed 4–5 months after ACL reconstruction. The subjects consisted of 3 age- and activity-matched groups of 6 subjects: a healthy control group (Ctrl) and 2 groups of patients, with Kenneth-Jones technique using autologous patellar-ligament graft (KJ group) and autologous graft from the semitendinosus tendon (ST group). When compared to the Ctrl group values, each patient group had significant bilateral extension torque deficits in isometric and at slow velocity concentric co…
Management of Atrial Fibrillation Suppression in AF-HF Comorbidity Therapy (MASCOT) Trial
2003
Inter- [1,2], intra- [3,4], and atrioventricular [51(AV) dyssynchrony are not new concepts, but only recently have attempts been made to correct these disorders in an effort to treat heart failure (HF). A series of trials [6] has addressed partial or comprehensive cardiac resynchronization in patients with severe HF and evidence of cardiac dyssynchrony. Cardiac resynchronization should improve left ventricular (LV) performance; several trials [7-10] have demonstrated improvement in many hemodynamic parameters (LV and aortic pressure, shortening of mitral diastolic regurgitation, synchronized LV and atrial systole, LV volume, reduced myocardial oxygen consumption) and clinical end-points (qu…

Vision-related function in the COPERNICUS and GALILEO trials
2014
Purpose To examine the impact of intravitreal aflibercept (IVT-AFL) injection on the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ) in the COPERNICUS and GALILEO trials. Methods Patients (pts) with macular oedema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion received IVT-AFL 2 mg (IVT-AFL 2q4) or sham monthly for 24 weeks. After Week 24 (W24) in COPERNICUS all pts were eligible to receive IVT-AFL based on visual and anatomical outcomes (IVT-AFL 2q4+PRN, sham+IVT-AFL PRN). In GALILEO, sham-treated pts received sham tx until W52. The NEI VFQ was administered at baseline (BL), W24 and W52. Total and subscale scores were compared between groups. W24 data were integrated an…
