Effect of pasteurization on the bactericidal capacity of human milk.
2008
The use of human milk in milk banks requires thermal processing to eliminate microbiological hazards. An evaluation is made of the stability of overall human milk bactericidal capacity following 2 modalities of thermal pasteurization: 63°C/30 minutes and 75°C/15 seconds. Ten milk samples (mature milk) were analyzed. In each sample, the effect of both thermal treatments on bactericidal capacity against Escherichia coli was evaluated in relation to the capacity of fresh milk (control). All the samples analyzed possessed bactericidal capacity. Human milk pasteurization induced a significant loss of this capacity that was more pronounced after high-temperature treatment than after low-temperat…
Kinetics of Ascorbic Acid Degradation in Green Asparagus during Heat Processing
1998
The effect of heating on ascorbic acid in green asparagus during a simulated retort operation was investigated. The asparagus was heated in trays of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer for selected time intervals at four temperatures ranging from 110 to 125 degrees C. It was found that the rate of degradation followed first-order kinetics. Kinetic parameters were obtained by using two least squares methods. The activation energy and z value were 35 kcal/mol and 20 degrees C, respectively.
Ancient human DNA.
2011
The contribution of palaeogenetic data to the study of various aspects of hominin biology and evolution has been significant, and has the potential to increase substantially with the widespread implementation of next generation sequencing techniques. Here we discuss the present state-of-the-art of ancient human DNA analysis and the characteristics of hominin aDNA that make sequence validation particularly complex. A brief overview of the development of anthropological palaeogenetic analysis is given to illustrate the technical challenges motivating recent technological advancements.
Feasibility study of VoIP in 3GPP UMTS release 5 interworking with fixed networks
2003
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2003 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is denoted as a 3rd generation cellular system and has been designed with the objective to be a system with global coverage. With improvement of bandwidth capabilities, the UMTS system has the ability to support real time multimedia services. The focus in this thesis is Voice over IP (VoIP) which enables a user to make phone calls in the packet switched network in UMTS. This thesis starts with a presentation of VoIP with the quality requirements related to a voice session. A voice conversation needs a guaranteed quality to satisfy the participants…
Wavelet-based video compression: A glimpse of the future?
2004
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2004 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad Even though wavelet-based video compression has been an area of research for more than a decade, motion estimation and compensation has been considered complex and inefficient until recently. We have carried out a thorough investigation of existing research work in this field, and found that fundamental problem with wavelet-based temporal removal while obtaining highly scalability (the wavelet-properties of multiresolution structure in combination with embedded coding), has been solved by performing motion compensated temporal filtering within the wavelet domain of a overcomplete three-dimensional li…
An improved image processing chain for mobile terminals
2002
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2002 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad Based on the proposal in the report by Tryggve Mikkelsen [Mikkelsen, 2001] this thesis investigates and discusses the implementation of a simplified image processing chain for modern mobile terminals. Previous work on image processing in this field of application has shown that the demosaicing operation, color space conversion and downsampling are resource demanding pre-processing operations. The simplification potential of the signal chain lies within the pictured scenario of using Bayer RGB from the image sensor directly as input to the compression scheme. By omitting these pre-processing operation…
Analysis of audio coding algorithms for networked embedded systems
2004
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2004 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad Today there are many different audio coding algorithms, some of them standardized by the ITU, like G.711, G.726 and G.728, and several other codecs by other organizations like Fraunhofer (mp3) and Microsoft (WMA). All these algorithms differ in several important features, like speech quality, bit or compression rate, robustness, delay, sampling frequency, complexity and range of use. The past decade we have witnessed a great progress towards application of low-rate speech/music coders as well as computer related voice/music applications. Central to this progress has been the development of speech cod…
Expanding Convolutional Tsetlin Machine for Images with Lossless Binarization
2020
Master's thesis in Information- and communication technology (IKT590) Deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) is known to be efficient in image classification but non-interpretable. To overcome the black box nature of CNN a derivative of the Tsetlin automata, the convolutional Tsetlin machine (CTM) which is transparent and interpretable, was developed. As CTM handles binary inputs, it is important to transform the input images into binary form with minimum information loss so that the CTM can classify them correctly and efficiently. Currently, a relatively lossy mechanism, called adaptive Gaussian thresholding, was employed for binarization. To retain as much information as possible, in th…
Incremental web crawling as a competitive game of learning automata
2005
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2005 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad There is no doubt that the World Wide Web has lived up to it’s hype of being the world’s central information highway through the past years. An increasing amount of versatile services keeps finding their way onto the Web as information providers continue to embrace the possibilities that the Web can offer. Especially the possibility of producing dynamic content has been an accelerant factor and is the reason why we now conveniently can participate in online auctions or see the latest development of our favorite stocks in near real-time from our own living rooms. However, for automated data mining app…
Camera functionality in modern mobile terminals : software FIR filter for demosaicing with RISC
2001
Masteroppgave i informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi 2001 - Høgskolen i Agder, Grimstad This thesis discusses implementation and optimizing of the image pre-processing operation demosaicing on a typical hardware architecture for mobile terminals. Work has shown that the demosaicing operation is equivalent to the mathematical operation of interpolation, and that optimizing potential lies within the implementation of the anti-imaging filter for the interpolator. This filter can be realized as an FIR filter with the filter coefficients obtained from a suitable interpolation function (kernel). Through literature review, nearest neighbor replication, bilinear and cubic convolution kernels we…
