Città, diritti e pratiche di mutualismo: riflessioni a partire dalle istanze comunitarie ai tempi della pandemia
2022
During the pandemic crisis, the “community” practices of mutualism have characterized the urban space by operating in a subsidiary, if not a substitute, manner with respect to public institutions. Their actions have been political in the sense in which Hannah Arendt defined this concept. Starting from a reflection on vulnerabilities, taking a case study as the object, and dialoguing with Orsetta Giolo’s essay, The rights against the city. Urban space, subjectivity and the public sphere, published in 2021, the potential and limits of these practices will be analyzed, along with their relationship with established power, with respect to the renewed tension between rights and territoriality, w…
Bene vivere politice

Abstract This chapter approaches the question of biopolitics in ancient political thought looking not at specific political techniques but at notions of the final aim of the political community. It argues that the “happiness” (eudaimonia, beatitudo) that constitutes the greatest human good in the tradition from Aristotle to Thomas Aquinas is not a “biopolitical” ideal, but rather a metabiopolitical one, consisting in a contemplative activity situated above and beyond the biological and the political. It is only with Thomas Hobbes that civic happiness becomes “biopolitically” identified with simple survival; for modernity, as Hannah Arendt puts it, mere being alive becomes the greatest human…

Political Action Beyond Resistance: Arendt and "Revolutionary Spirit" in Egypt
2016
The article examines what it calls the "politics-as-resistance" frame in contemporary political theory, originating in the works of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. This way of organizing political experience is contrasted with Hannah Arendt's political thought, particularly her writings on revolutionary action. Arendt's often overlooked – and partly unpublished – passages on virtù and fortuna are further suggested as important additions to her thinking on action. I argue that Arendt's "world-centric" approach can illuminate certain aspects of political experience that remain dimmed in the more subject-oriented politics-as-resistance frame. Particular focus is paid to the austere notion o…

Arendt, Eichmann and the Politics of the Past
2021
Part of the Pro et Contra series. Arendt, Eichmann and the Politics of the Past offers a critical analysis of the original American debate over Hannah Arendt’s report of the trial of Adolf Eichmann. First published in 2008, Tuija Parvikko’s book discusses both the campaign against Arendt organised by American Zionist organisations and the controversy Arendt’s report caused within American Jewish intellectual circles. Parvikko’s analysis carefully draws from the historical background of the report, discussing Arendt’s early studies of Zionism and her critique of the Jewish state. The volume also gives an account of Eichmann’s capture in Argentina and the reception of the report among legal s…
