The Harderian Gland of the Djungarian Hamster (<i>Phodopus sungorus</i>): Light- and Electron-Microscopical Investigations
1993
The Harderian gland of the Djungarian hamster Phodopus sungorus was investigated by light and electron microscopy in adult animals of both sexes, held under either long or short photoperiods. These glands have a tubuloalveolar structure. Epithelial cells were seen as small cylindric cells with a large, round nucleus located basally, many small vacuoles distributed throughout the cytoplasm (type I cells) or as rather broad cells with larger vacuoles (type II cells). The ratio of both cell types differed from 1:1 to 2:1 (type I:type II), regardless of the animal’s sex. In the electron microscope, abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum of the vesicular type and rod-like or oval-shaped mitochond…
Prevalence of biopsied oral lesions in a Department of Oral Surgery (2007 - 2009)
2011
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of the hard and soft tissue lesions biopsied in the Department of Oral Surgery of the Barcelona University Dental Clinic (Barcelona, Spain). Study design: A retrospective descriptive study was made of the biopsies performed between January 2007 and April 2009 in our Department of Oral Surgery. The following variables were recorded: age, the sex, location of the lesion, the biopsy technique, the reason for consultation, and the histological result obtained. Results: A total of 460 lesions amenable to histological analysis and corresponding to 450 patients were analyzed. The most frequently biopsied lesions were maxillary cysts, including particularly r…
Mobile platform for online processing of multimodal skin optical images: Using online Matlab server for processing remission, fluorescence and laser …
2015
Mobile platform for multimodal skin assessment has been developed. Different illumination sources allow switching between modalities. Diffuse reflectance spectral imaging is provided by five LEDs, fluorescence is excited by 405 nm LEDs, and laser speckle by 650 nm laser diode. Handheld, battery powered device includes all light sources and color camera with USB. The core of the system is Linux OS embedded microcontroller. USB, FTP and HTML with JavaScript combination is used to create standard image transfer and control interface. In combination with built in WiFi access point it allows online skin images storage and processing. It means that data processing algorithms are located and updat…
Hyperpigmentation of hard palate induced by chloroquine therapy
2017
The antimalarials are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for conditions such as lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, and the side effects, though infrequent, are well known. The antimalarial agent chloroquine diphosphate usually causes pigmentary changes in the oral mucosa characterized by a bluish-grey to black discolorations mainly in the hard palate. Considering only the hard palate hyperpigmentation caused by chloroquine, to the best of our knowledge, only 13 cases have been reported in the English language literature. We described an additional case of palate hyperpigmentation related to the chronic use of chloroquine diphosphate in a 60-year-old Mexican woman. Although…
Melanoma of the oral mucosa with cerebral metastasis: a clinical case
2005
Summary Oral melanoma (OM) is an infrequent neoplasia making up less than 1% of all melanomas, and which exhibits a much more aggressive behaviour than those found on the skin. We present a case of OM located on the hard palate, vestibular alveolar gingiva of the maxilla, and upper lip in a 75-year-old patient who developed a distant metastasis on the left parietal lobe. The advanced stage of the disease contraindicated any surgical intervention and it was decided to carry out palliative radiotherapy, but the patient died before treatment.
Histopathology of the Harderian gland of rodents exposed to ELF magnetic fields
1993
Abstract The Harderian gland is a possible magnetosensitive organ. The aim of this study was to look at the possible effects on the Harderian gland of mice after exposure to an artificial magnetic field. Sixty 0F1 three-month old female mice were selected for this study. The mice were exposed continuously to an artificial magnetic field of 1 G (10 −4 T) and 50 Hz during a three-month period. The effects were evaluated histologically. The results show, only in the experimental group, non-reversible histopathological lesions with anaplasic foci in 26% of Harderian glands. These lesions also include in situ development of adenocarcinomas. Confidence intervals applied to the statistical studies…
Palatal perforations secondary to inhaled cocaine abuse: presentation of five cases
2010
The estimated incidence of complications associated with cocaine abuse is 4.8%. Palatal perforation is a very infrequent condition within the range of complications associated with cocaine abuse. No epidemiological cha- racteristics relating to patient age or gender have been established, and the diagnosis of the disorder requires a detailed clinical history, including antecedents of cocaine abuse. The clinical and radiological studies show palatal bone erosion and perforation of the soft or hard palate. The present study describes five cases of palatal perforation secondary to inhaled cocaine abuse. As a result of the increase in cocaine use in recent years, particularly among young adults…

IMPAIRED DECISION-MAKING AND DIFFUSION ORIENTATIONAL COMPLEXITY IN PEOPLE WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
2013
Objective Difficulties with decision-making have been reported in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). It is however unclear what aspect of decision making is impaired, for example whether they are more impulsive, and how any impairments relate to grey matter pathology. In this study we assess grey matter microstructure using a novel measure of the number of diffusion orientations on diffusion MRI “diffusion orientation complexity (DOC)”. We studied DOC in cortical areas known to be associated with decision making and looked at its associations with performance on the Cambridge Gambling Task (CGT). Method One hundred and five patients with MS (61 RR, 26 SP, 18 PP; mean age: 45.9 years) and …
