New generation super alloy candidates for medical applications: Corrosion behavior, cation release and biological evaluation

Three super alloy candidates (X1 CrNiMoMnW 24-22-6-3-2 N, NiCr21 MoNbFe 8-3-5 AlTi, CoNiCr 35-20 Mo 10 BTi) for a prolonged contact with skin are evaluated in comparison with two reference austenitic stainless steels 316L and 904L. Several electrochemical parameters were measured and determined (E(oc), E(corr), i(corr), b(a), b(c), E(b), R(p), E(crev) and coulometric analysis) in order to compare the corrosion behavior. The cation release evaluation and in vitro biological characterization also were performed. The use of self-assembled nanostructures consisting of red-light-responsive Ru(II)-containing block copolymers (BCPs) for anticancer phototherapy is demonstrated. Three Ru-containing BCPs with different molecular weights are synthesized. Each BCP contains a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) block and an Ru-containing block. In the Ru-containing block, more than half of the side chains are coordinated with [Ru(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)(2,2'-biquinoline)](2+) , resulting in more than 40 wt% Ru complex in the BCPs. Abstract We describe a method how polymeric nanoparticles stabilized with (2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA)-based block copolymers are used as drug delivery systems for a fast release of hydrophobic and a controlled release of an amphiphilic molecule. The versatile method of the miniemulsion solvent-evaporation technique was used to prepare polystyrene (PS) as well as poly-d/l-lactide (PDLLA) nanoparticles. We have shown previously that simple RNA structures bind pure phospholipid liposomes. However, binding of bona fide cellular RNAs under physiological ionic conditions is shown here for the first time. Human tRNASec contains a hydrophobic anticodon-loop modification: N6-isopentenyladenosine (i6A) adjacent to its anticodon. Using a highly specific double-probe hybridization assay, we show mature human tRNASec specifically retained in HeLa intermediate-density membranes. The DNA repair protein O(6)-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is an important suicide enzyme involved in the defense against O(6)-alkylating mutagens. It also plays a role in the resistance of tumors to anticancer drugs targeting the O(6)-position of guanine, such as temozolomide and fotemustine. Cytotoxic necrotising factors type 1 (CNF1) and type 2 (CNF2) are produced by many Escherichia coli strains isolated from man and animals with intestinal or extra-intestinal colibacillosis. In most laboratories, CNF-producing strains are detected by a cell cytotoxicity assay and confirmed with a neutralisation assay or a mouse footpad assay. Measles virus produces discrete foci of degeneration in monkey kidney cell and HeLa cell cultures with antibody-free liquid medium. The number of sharply defined “foci” is directly proportional to the relative virus dilution. The technique for enumeration of infective units of measles virus by “foci” count is described. The self-limiting spread of measles virusin vitro and some possible advantages over the standard plaque method are discussed.
