[Use of imaging criteria to identify cervical metastases using CT scans in head and neck tumours].

2008

Abstract Objective To assess the diagnostic certainty of CT images to identify regional spread of head and neck tumours. Patients and method A CT study was performed on 86 patients with neoplasms in the larynx and/or pharynx. After this, surgical dissection was performed for 142 neck sides. In the imaging study the following parameters were considered for all patients before suspecting malignant nodes: size of adenopathy bigger than 10–11 mm, irregular borders, central necrosis, spherical shape, capsular enhancement, and presence of groups with 3 or more lymphadenopathies. Results 48.5% of dissections were N+. Sensitivity and specificity for physical examination were 59% and 82%, respective…

Computerised tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma: A practical approach

2017

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common head and neck cancer. This review describes the state-of-the-art computerised tomography and magnetic resonance imaging protocols of the neck and the normal larynx anatomy, and provides a practical approach for the diagnosis and staging of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

The immunohistochemical expression of leptin in lymph node metastasis from laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

2020

Introduction: Leptin is a proteohormone produced predominantly by white adipocytes and primarily known for its key role in the control of food intake and sense of satiety. From its discover leptin has been found in different body districts, involved in always new functions and processes. In the last years numerous relationships between leptin and cancer has been found. The aim of this study is to test the leptin positivity in human primitive laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and in its lymph node metastasis. Materials and methods: Leptin positivity was detected by immunohistochemical analysis on pathological samples from 18 patients subjected to laryngectomy and neck dissection for SC…

Vascular labeling of the head and neck vessels : technique, advantages and limitations

2017

Background Vascular staining techniques have been used to describe the vascular structures of several anatomic areas. However, few reports have described this procedure in the head and neck region. This paper describes a head and neck vascular labeling procedure, and describes some of the technical complications that may occur. Material and methods Fifteen specimen cadaver heads were prepared. After drying the vascular system, the internal carotid arteries were ligated and a solution with latex and a gelling agent was injected into the internal carotid arteries and external jugular veins. Two different colors were employed to differentiate arteries from veins. A total of 60ml latex was inje…

Quality of life before and after total laryngectomy: Results of a multicenter prospective cohort study

2013

Background The purpose of this study was to determine what quality of life (QOL) areas improve and deteriorate during the first year after total laryngectomy and to identify predictors of these changes. Methods One hundred seventy-four patients completed the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QOL questionnaires before laryngectomy, n = 133 before discharge from hospital, n = 110 at the end of rehabilitation, and n = 86 1 year after laryngectomy. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to estimate the effect of potential predictors on QOL. Results Areas that did not recover to baseline level were physical functioning, role functioning, social functionin…

A smart and operator independent system to delineate tumours in Positron Emission Tomography scans

2018

Abstract Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging has an enormous potential to improve radiation therapy treatment planning offering complementary functional information with respect to other anatomical imaging approaches. The aim of this study is to develop an operator independent, reliable, and clinically feasible system for biological tumour volume delineation from PET images. Under this design hypothesis, we combine several known approaches in an original way to deploy a system with a high level of automation. The proposed system automatically identifies the optimal region of interest around the tumour and performs a slice-by-slice marching local active contour segmentation. It automa…

Increased radioresistance via G12S K-Ras by compensatory upregulation of MAPK and PI3K pathways in epithelial cancer

2011

Background Irradiation-induced signaling via the 2 pathways, Raf-MEK-ERK and PI3K-Akt, is known to be closely associated with a limited response to radiotherapy. In the present study we analyzed the relevance of constitutively active K-Ras for postradiogenic pathway stimulation and the option of coordinated inhibition to overcome these rescue mechanisms. Methods We used 2 epithelial tumor cell lines as a model system, one of them harboring a G12S K-Ras mutation. Cells were irradiated and the effect of combined treatment with ionizing radiation and inhibitors on the expression of pERK and pAkt was determined by Western blotting. Additionally, clonogenic assays were performed to functionally …

Intratympanale Intervalltherapie des Morbus Menire mit Gentamicin unter Erhalt der Kochleafunktion

2003

Comprehensive Genomic and Transcriptomic Analysis of Three Synchronous Primary Tumours and a Recurrence from a Head and Neck Cancer Patient

2021

Synchronous primary malignancies occur in a small proportion of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. Here, we analysed three synchronous primaries and a recurrence from one patient by comparing the genomic and transcriptomic profiles among the tumour samples and determining the recurrence origin. We found remarkable levels of heterogeneity among the primary tumours, and through the patterns of shared mutations, we traced the origin of the recurrence. Interestingly, the patient carried germline variants that might have predisposed him to carcinogenesis, together with a history of alcohol and tobacco consumption. The mutational signature analysis confirmed the impact of alc…
