Structure–activity relationship of sphingomyelin analogs with sphingomyelinase from Bacillus cereus

2012

AbstractThe aim of this study was to examine how structural properties of different sphingomyelin (SM) analogs affected their substrate properties with sphingomyelinase (SMase) from Bacillus cereus. Using molecular docking and dynamics simulations (for SMase–SM complex), we then attempted to explain the relationship between SM structure and enzyme activity. With both micellar and monolayer substrates, 3O-methylated SM was found not to be degraded by the SMase. 2N-methylated SM was a substrate, but was degraded at about half the rate of its 2NH–SM control. PhytoPSM was readily hydrolyzed by the enzyme. PSM lacking one methyl in the phosphocholine head group was a good substrate, but PSM lack…

A stereotactic device for rabbits based on mandibular and cranial landmarks

2008

✓ The authors have developed a stereotactic device for use in rabbits that uses the plane at the base of the mandible combined with cranial sutures as an anatomical reference. The device was developed for a study designed to evaluate catheters for infection prophylaxis, and this required the implantation of silicone catheters along a reproducible trajectory through the lateral ventricle. Cadaver and atlas studies demonstrated consistent spatial relationships between intracranial structures and the surface plane on which the animals were resting during the surgery. This plane is formed by the 2 mandibular angles and the mandibular tip. The authors developed a stainless steel stereotactic dev…

Fish welfare in aquaculture: From physiology to molecular activities and new tools for study innovative diets, social and spatial stress

2022

Guaranteeing a high quality of life for animals has recently become a matter of increasing concern. Welfare assessment has been well-developed for terrestrial species, mainly for those kept in captivity, but the current state of the art is less well-characterized for aquatic animals. The classical methodologies utilised to date, such as the kind of behavioural observation widely used for terrestrial animals, are not appropriate for improving our knowledge of the well-being of aquatic animals if used alone, mainly due to the large number of species and the difficulty of obtaining comparative results among the different taxa of interest. Among different approaches, the evaluation of internal …

El componente pragmático en los diccionarios: Implicaciones para la Lexicografía

2015

Dictionaries are a list of words, simple or complex, that are treated as entries (lexical items). It is usual to assert several components: the lemma or headword, named after its most neutral form, followed by an indication of the main inflections of its category: genre and number if they are names, syntactic class if they are verbs. Sometimes, indications of it are made in other aspects: etymology, pronunciation, marks of placement, area of use, register, frequency of use, etc.Among all the group, it is pointed out an area that grows daily, painstakingly, in lexicographic works: the pragmatic component. Most of the words are referential (names, verbs, adverbs), but others correspond to lan…

Disentangling cardiovascular control mechanisms during head-down tilt via joint transfer entropy and self-entropy decompositions

2015

A full decomposition of the predictive entropy (PE) of the spontaneous variations of the heart period (HP) given systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and respiration (R) is proposed. The PE of HP is decomposed into the joint transfer entropy (JTE) from SAP and R to HP and self-entropy (SE) of HP. The SE is the sum of three terms quantifying the synergistic/redundant contributions of HP and SAP, when taken individually and jointly, to SE and one term conditioned on HP and SAP denoted as the conditional SE (CSE) of HP given SAP and R. The JTE from SAP and R to HP is the sum of two terms attributable to SAP or R plus an extra term describing the redundant/synergistic contribution to the JTE. All q…

Tumor fibroso localizado de la pleura: hallazgos radiológicos

2007

Localized fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare tumors that represent less than 5% of the pleural tumors, although they have also been described in extrathoracic locations such as the abdomen, head and neck or central nervous system. A total of 80% begin in the visceral pleura and are not related with environmental risk factors. They generally occur in patients over 50 with a mild predominance in the woman. Up to 50% of the patients are asymptomatic, so that it appears as an incidental finding on the chest X-ray. These are slow growing tumors. They are seen on the X-ray as well-defined rounded lesions dependent on the pleura and 50% are pediculated. It is important to know its radiological …

What does preoperative three-dimensional image contribute to complex pancreatic surgery?

2020

Abstract The possibility of modelling diagnostic images in three dimensions (3D) in pancreatic surgery is a novelty that provides us multiple advantages. A better visualization of the structures allows us a more accurate planning of the surgical technique and makes it easier the surgery in complex cases. We present the case study of a borderline pancreatic head adenocarcinoma patient to illustrate the advantages of 3D modelling in complex pancreatic surgery. The help of 3D technology allowed us to optimally plan the intervention and facilitate surgical resection. The use of this tool could translate into: shorter operative time, fewer intraoperative complications or an increase in R0 resect…

The alignment of head nods with syntactic units in Finnish Sign Language and Swedish Sign Language

2016

In this paper we examine the relationship between specific head movement events – head nods, often treated as prosodic boundary markers – and syntactic units in Finnish (FinSL) and Swedish Sign Language (SSL). In the study we investigated the alignment of head nods with syntactic units on the basis of a total of 20 (10+10) FinSL and SSL narratives. The results of the study show that in both languages head nods appeared similarly on syntactic boundaries and that the tendency was to align nods sentence-finally. However, not all head nods behaved this way: for example, a relatively large number of head nods were also found to occur sentence-initially or elsewhere in the sentence. Furthermore, …

On the rhythm of head movements in Finnish and Swedish Sign Language sentences

2016

This paper investigates, with the help of computer-vision technology, the similarities and differences in the rhythm of the movements of the head in sentences in Finnish (FinSL) and Swedish Sign Language (SSL). The results show that the movement of the head in the two languages is often very similar: in both languages, the instances when the movement of the head changes direction were distributed similarly with regard to clause-boundaries, and the contours of the roll (tilting-like) motion of the head during the sentences were similar. Concerning differences, direction changes were found to be used more effectively in the marking of clause-boundaries in FinSL, and in SSL the head moved near…
