Novel missense mutation in the ATP1A2 gene associated with atypical sporapedic hemiplegic migraine

Hemiplegic migraine (HM) is a rare subtype of migraine with aura in which attacks include transient motor weakness or hemiparesis that can last several days. HM is linked to mutations in three different genes, CACNA1A, ATP1A2 and SCN1A, which encode for ion transporters. The clinical spectrum includes atypical symptoms such as impaired consciousness, epileptic seizures, permanent cerebellar ataxia or mental retardation. Prevalence of primary headaches in Italian elderly: Preliminary data from the Zabút Aging Project

We describe preliminary 1-year prevalence data of recurrent migraine headache (MH), tension-type headache (TTH), and other headaches (OH) in a rural elderly population. A door-to-door two-phase survey was conducted on all elderly (or=65 years) residents of a rural village in southern Italy. Participants underwent a two-phase screening including a validated semi-structured questionnaire for headaches based on the International Headache Society criteria, and a neurological evaluation. Osmophobia as an early marker of migraine: a follow-up study in juvenile patients.

Background: Osmophobia is frequent in children with migraine (20–35%) but can also occur in up to 14% of cases with tension-type headache (TTH). So far, the prognostic role of this symptom in children with primary headaches has never been evaluated. Methods: A longitudinal prospective study was conducted on 90 young patients with TTH (37 with osmophobia, 53 without osmophobia). We evaluated whether osmophobia could predict the diagnosis transformation from TTH to migraine after a 3-year follow-up. This study was designed to compare the sperm nuclear morphometry of four species of domestic artiodactyls (cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs), using the newly developed automatic computer-assisted sperm morphometry analysis-F. A fine adjustment of sperm head size and shape occurs during maturation and storage within the male excurrent duct of the rabbit. This remodelling, as judged by morphometric values of area, perimeter, length, width, and shape factors, takes place mostly in passage from the seminiferous tubules of the testis to the distal caput of the epididymis. The dimensions of sperm heads from the distal corpus of the epididymis break the general tendency toward a reduction in size and more elliptical shapes.
