Strategies for Including Patients Recruited During Interim Analysis of Clinical Trials

2007

In clinical trials a periodical check of safety and efficacy data is often needed. For organizational reasons it is rarely desirable to stop a trial during such an interim analysis. Therefore, new study patients are included in the trial while the interim analysis is ongoing. Disregarding the additional information provided by these interim patients would be unsatisfactory, especially for an office of regulatory affairs. Consequently, the rules for group sequential or adaptive decisions must be adjusted to the recruitment of interim patients. In this paper, two strategies for modifying study designs to consider the analysis of interim patients are proposed.

Constructing the Audit Risk Assessment by the Audit Team Leader When Planning: Using Fuzzy Theory

2021

The aim of this study is to construct the assessment of the expected audit risk by the audit team leader (ATL) during the planification phase of the audit. The ATL plays an important role within the audit, and even more so regarding small and medium-sized (SME) audit firms. The audit risk assessment is critical as relying more (less) on internal controls implemented by the client leads to performing less (more) substantive audit procedures. This is determined by the ATL based on their professional judgement and previous experience. The use of fuzzy theory has powerful potential into the audit arena, as the audit risk assessment (outcome) is critically related to the auditors’ judgement and …

Theoretical perspectives upon the return to work of cancer patients: The difficult path of integration in the organization

2015

Abstract The present article follows an in-depth analysis of several relevant articles and major findings concerning the return to work of cancer patients, in various situations, from a manager and patient point of view, putting into discussion the effects and consequences of different factors that may influence the well-being of the patient at work and impact the organizational life. The concepts of returning to work and integration are scarcely analysed throughout the scholarly literature in the case of employees diagnosed with cancer, due to several reasons presented in the paper: from the complex topic of investigation that many studies fail to approach in terms of confidentiality, tech…

Modern health worries and idiopathic environmental intolerance.

2008

Abstract Objective We conducted two studies to test whether modern health worries (MHWs) were associated with central features of a condition called idiopathic environmental intolerance (IEI) and medical care utilization. Methods In Study 1, 474 Internet users completed an Internet-based questionnaire that assessed MHWs, IEI features, and medical care utilization. In Study 2, the diagnostic specificity of MHWs was investigated by comparing the level of MHWs of three diagnostic groups: 46 people with IEI, 38 people with somatoform disorder but without IEI, and 46 people with neither IEI nor somatoform disorder. Results The good psychometric properties of the MHW scale were confirmed. MHWs we…

Clinical evidence continuous medical education: a randomised educational trial of an open access e-learning program for transferring evidence-based i…

2008

Abstract Background In an effort to ensure that all physicians have access to valid and reliable evidence on drug effectiveness, the Italian Drug Agency sponsored a free-access e-learning system, based on Clinical Evidence, called ECCE. Doctors have access to an electronic version and related clinical vignettes. Correct answers to the interactive vignettes provide Continuing Medical Education credits. The aims of this trial are to establish whether the e-learning program (ECCE) increases physicians' basic knowledge about common clinical scenarios, and whether ECCE is superior to the passive diffusion of information through the printed version of Clinical Evidence. Design All Italian doctors…

Shielding families’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic: a review across the UK and Italy

2022

As communities have gone into lockdown to stop the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the mass efforts to save lives has put some people more at risk than others, and in their own homes. Starting with a comparison between Italy and the UK, this review examines the impact of pandemic measures for those shielding families who are affected by abusive relationships and those who, with health and social care needs, are considered at high risk of serious consequences if they are exposed to COVID-19 measures. Focusing on an increased number of DV cases reported, we explore the impact of pandemic measures on vulnerable people and families through a review on this topic, that comprises early…
