Dinuclear palladium(ii) compounds with bridging cyclometalated phosphines. Synthesis, crystal structure and electrochemical study
2006
The structural characterization of bis-cyclometalated palladium(II) compounds of formula Pd2[(micro-(C6X4)PPh2]2(micro-O2CR)2 [X = H, R = CH3 (3), CF3 (4), C(CH3)3 (5) and C6F5 (6); X = F, R = CH3 (7) and CF3 (8)], has confirmed its paddle wheel structure with two palladium atoms bridged by two acetates and two metalated phosphines in a head-to-tail arrangement. The Pd...Pd distances are in the range 2.6779(16)-2.7229(8) A. Under cyclic voltammetric conditions, compounds 3-6, in CH2Cl2 solution, were found to undergo a reversible oxidation peak in the range of potential values 0.84-1.25 V. A second partially-reversible oxidation is observed at more positive potentials (1.37-1.55 V). For com…
From First Principles to the Burrows and Wheeler Transform and Beyond, via Combinatorial Optimization
2007
AbstractWe introduce a combinatorial optimization framework that naturally induces a class of optimal word permutations with respect to a suitably defined cost function taking into account various measures of relatedness between words. The Burrows and Wheeler transform (bwt) (cf. [M. Burrows, D. Wheeler, A block sorting lossless data compression algorithm, Technical Report 124, Digital Equipment Corporation, 1994]), and its analog for labelled trees (cf. [P. Ferragina, F. Luccio, G. Manzini, S. Muthukrishnan, Structuring labeled trees for optimal succinctness, and beyond, in: Proc. of the 45th Annual IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science, 2005, pp. 198–207]), are special cases i…
Optimal Partitions of Strings: A New Class of Burrows-Wheeler Compression Algorithms
2003
The Burrows-Wheeler transform [1] is one of the mainstays of lossless data compression. In most cases, its output is fed to Move to Front or other variations of symbol ranking compression. One of the main open problems [2] is to establish whether Move to Front, or more in general symbol ranking compression, is an essential part of the compression process. We settle this question positively by providing a new class of Burrows-Wheeler algorithms that use optimal partitions of strings, rather than symbol ranking, for the additional step. Our technique is a quite surprising specialization to strings of partitioning techniques devised by Buchsbaum et al. [3] for two-dimensional table compression…
SORTING CONJUGATES AND SUFFIXES OF WORDS IN A MULTISET
2014
In this paper we are interested in the study of the combinatorial aspects related to the extension of the Burrows-Wheeler transform to a multiset of words. Such study involves the notion of suffixes and conjugates of words and is based on two different order relations, denoted by <lex and ≺ω, that, even if strictly connected, are quite different from the computational point of view. In particular, we introduce a method that only uses the <lex sorting among suffixes of a multiset of words in order to sort their conjugates according to ≺ω-order. In this study an important role is played by Lyndon words. This strategy could be used in applications specially in the field of Bioinformatic…
‘It’s not a part of me, but it is what it is’: the struggle of becoming en-wheeled after spinal cord injury
2019
Many people who experience spinal cord injury become long-term wheelchair users. This article addresses the process of becoming en-wheeled through the case example of a disabled man called Patrick. An intrinsic case study informed by posthumanist developments was used. Within this design, Patrick and his manual wheelchair were the entangled participants of the inquiry.Interviews and fieldwork observation with Patrick were conducted. Qualitative data were analysed using the posthumanist notion of 'assemblages'.The results illuminate Patrick's struggle of negotiating a new embodied selfhood that includes the wheelchair. Patrick engaged in ableist rehabilitation after spinal cord injury to recu…
Genetic determinants of heel bone properties: genome-wide association meta-analysis and replication in the GEFOS/GENOMOS consortium
2014
Quantitative ultrasound of the heel captures heel bone properties that independently predict fracture risk and, with bone mineral density (BMD) assessed by X-ray (DXA), may be convenient alternatives for evaluating osteoporosis and fracture risk. We performed a meta-analysis of genome-wide association (GWA) studies to assess the genetic determinants of heel broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA; n = 14 260), velocity of sound (VOS; n = 15 514) and BMD (n = 4566) in 13 discovery cohorts. Independent replication involved seven cohorts with GWA data (in silico n = 11 452) and new genotyping in 15 cohorts (de novo n = 24 902). In combined random effects, meta-analysis of the discovery and repli…
Differences in kinematic and match-play demands between elite winning and losing wheelchair padel players
2020
We aimed to compare the match-play and kinematic demands of the translation and rotation movements of elite wheelchair padel players as a function of match results. Twenty-two elite male players were video-analysed with a two-dimensional direct linear transformation (DLT) -corrected video system across seven matches of a professional tournament. Distance, turns, changes of direction, linear and angular speed, acceleration and the players’ heart rate (HR) were recorded. Losing couples in wheelchair padel covered greater distances than winners (P <0.001; r = 0.024) and did so at a higher speed (P <0.001; r = 0.06), while making greater efforts by accelerating (P <0.001; ∅ = -0.021), braking (…
Voluntary wheel running protects against the increase in ethanol consumption induced by social stress in mice
2020
Abstract Previous studies have shown that exposure to social defeat (SD), a model of social stress, produces a long-term increase in the consumption of ethanol, most likely through an increase in the neuroinflammation response. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether exposure to physical activity in the form of voluntary wheel running (VWR) could block the increase in ethanol consumption and the neuroinflammatory response induced by social stress. Mice were exposed to either 4 sessions of repeated social defeat (RSD) or a non-stressful experience. During the whole procedure, half of the mice were exposed to controlled physical activity, being allowed 1 h access to a low-profile…
Key Physical Factors in the Serve Velocity of Male Professional Wheelchair Tennis Players
2021
The aim of this study was to identify the physical factors related to serve speed in male professional wheelchair tennis players (WT). Nine best nationally-ranked Spanish male wheelchair tennis players (38.35 ± 11.28 years, 63.77 ± 7.01 kg.) completed a neuromuscular test battery consisting of: isometric handgrip strength
Effect of intramedullary gradual elongation of the shorter limb on gait patterns
2003
Background: Seven young patients were followed 52 weeks after intramedullary lengthening for limb length discrepancy (LLD). The mean LLD before surgery was 3.0 ± 1.1 cm and 1 year after surgery at the time of the nail-removal it was 0.3 ± 0.3 cm. Methods: The plantar pressures and the ground reaction forces (GRF) were recorded simultaneously with electromyographic (EMG) activities at normal and fast walking speeds. Results: Bilateral comparison indicated that the uncorrected LLD resulted in asymmetrical gait patterns. The peak pressures were higher in the lateral heel and in the medial forefoot in the longer limb as compared to the shorter limb at normal walking speed. At fast walking speed…
