The Burrows-Wheeler Transform (denoted by BWT) is a well founded mathematical transformation on sequences introduced in 1994, widely used in the context of Data Compression and recently studied also from a combinatorial point of view. The transformation does not itself compress the data, but it produces a permutation bwt(w) of an input string w that is easier to compress than the original one, with some fast locally-adaptive algorithms, such as Move-to-Front in combination with Huffman or arithmetic coding. Fostering the energy efficiency through the energy savings: The case of the University of Palermo

This paper reports the strategy implemented by the Palermo University (Italy) aimed at fostering the energy performance of its campus, particularly towards financing energy saving measures. The basic idea is that the money saved through the energy efficiency actions, constitute the main flywheel to fund further savings and energy efficiency interventions. Results of this paper might bring a useful contribution to the energy planning of cities, since campuses may be regarded as emblematic case study of what can be done in cities because they reproduce, at a little scale, the functioning of wider urban contexts.

The Burrows-Wheeler Transform is a string transformation that plays a fundamental role for the design of self-indexing compressed data structures. Over the years, researchers have successfully extended this transformation outside the domains of strings. Objectives: The goals of this study were to validate the use of accelerometers by means of multiple linear models (MLMs) to estimate the O2 consumption (VO2) in paraplegic persons and to determine the best placement for accelerometers on the human body. Setting: Non-hospitalized paraplegics’ community. Ligand engineering in Cu(ii) paddle wheel metal–organic frameworks for enhanced semiconductivity

We report the electronic structure of two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with copper paddle wheel nodes connected by a N2(C2H4)3 (DABCO) ligand with accessible nitrogen lone pairs. The coordination is predicted, from first-principles density functional theory, to enable electronic pathways that could facilitate charge carrier mobility. Calculated frontier crystal orbitals indicate extended electronic communication in DMOF-1, but not in MOF-649. This feature is confirmed by bandstructure calculations and effective masses of the valence band egde.
