This paper presents an ongoing study for the estimation of the cloud-top height by using only geometrical methods. It is based on the hypothesis that an infra-red camera is on board a satellite and pairs of images concern nearly the same scene. Stereo-vision techniques are therefore explored in order to test the methodology for height retrieval and in particular results of several techniques of stereo matching are evaluated. Measuring the thickness of biological films remains a difficult task when using differential measurements by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The use of microstructured substrates combined with a selective adsorption constitutes an alternative to tribological measurements. The statistical thickness analysis of biological layers, especially via the dispersion measurements, can provide a way to quantify the molecular orientation. Complete band gap in a pillar-based piezoelectric phononic crystal slab

In this paper we have shown that it is possible to obtain the complete phononic band gaps in a square lattice of pillar-based phononic crystal. Bigger phononic band gap width can be obtained by increasing the height of pillar and it filling fraction, f. It is shown that the gap-to-mid-gap ratio of pillar at h/a = 0.5 has increased by 21.2% when it height increased to 1.25 and the gap-to-mid-gap ratio has increased by 12% when the filling fraction is increased from r/a = 0.3 to 0.45. The study also shows bigger band gap width and higher central frequency can be obtained by increasing the filling fraction of pillar.

Objectives The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the vertical osteoconductive and osteointegrative dynamics around titanium–zirconium (TiZr) implants compared to titanium (Ti) implants. Northern Hemisphere atmospheric pattern enhancing Eastern Mediterranean Transient-type events during the past 1000 years

High-resolution climate model simulations for the last millennium were used to elucidate the main winter Northern Hemisphere atmospheric pattern during enhanced Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT-type) events, a situation in which an additional overturning cell is detected in the Mediterranean at the Aegean Sea. The differential upward heat flux between the Aegean Basin and the Gulf of Lion was taken as a proxy of EMT-type events and correlated with winter mean geopotential height at 500 mbar in the Northern Hemisphere (20–90∘ N and 100∘ W–80∘ E). Abstract Weather regimes (WRs) have been defined over the Euro-Mediterranean region (15°–70°N, 60°W–60°E) from May to October using the daily sea level pressure, 700-hPa geopotential height, and specific humidity from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis (ERA)-Interim over the 1989–2008 period.
