Spatial development of multiple-gap states in nonequilibrium superconductors

1985

We have studied the gap instability in a superconductor under tunneling injection at high voltages by probing the spatial distribution of the phonon emission. A high sensitivity was achieved by using the fountain pressure of superfluid helium for detecting the phonons. Spatial structures were observed at gap depressions as small as 2%. From their spatial development we find that the quasiparticles diffuse into regions where their density is higher.

Time-domain analysis of electronic spectra in superfluid 4He

2004

Abstract Electronic absorption spectra of impurities in superfluid helium is developed in time domain, using time-dependent density functional theory to describe liquid 4 He and time-dependent perturbation theory to describe the electronic degrees of freedom of the impurity. Angularly isotropic potentials are used to describe the molecule–helium interactions in the ground and excited electronic states. The calculations rationalize experimentally observed phonon side-bands in 4 He droplets and in bulk helium, and allow assignments of spectral features to specific motions of the liquid.

Subcellular localization and characterization of nitric oxide synthase(s) in endothelial cells: physiological implications.

1994

Endothelial cells (EC) contain a constitutive Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent nitric oxide (NO) synthase (cNOS) which plays an important role in the local control of vascular tone. We compared the subcellular distribution of this enzyme in cultured and freshly isolated pig EC by determination of specific cNOS activity and immunoblot analysis. Similar studies were also performed with cultured and freshly isolated bovine and cultured human EC. Enzyme activity was predominantly (> 70%) associated with the particulate fraction of all EC types tested and was highest in freshly isolated porcine EC. Both specific cNOS activity and immunoreactivity were substantially higher (> 3-fold) in th…

Cytotoxicity and inhibition of P-glycoprotein by selected medicinal plants from Thailand.

2014

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Thai medicine has a long tradition of tonifying medicinal plants. In the present investigation, we studied the flower extracts of Jasminum sambac, Mammea siamensis, Mesua ferrea, Michelia alba, Mimusops elengi, and Nelumbo nucifera and speculated that these plants might influence metabolism and substance flow in the body. Materials and methods Isolation of porcine brain capillary endothelial cells (PBCECs) as well as multidrug-resistance CEM/ADR5000 leukemia cells, MDA-M;B-231 breast cancer, U-251 brain tumor, and HCT-116 colon cancer cells were used. The calcein-acetoxymethylester (AM) assay was used to measure inhibition of P-glycoprotein transport.…

Analysis of intrapulmonary O2concentration by MR imaging of inhaled hyperpolarized helium-3

1999

Inhalation of hyperpolarized 3He allows magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of ventilated airspaces.3He hyperpolarization decays more rapidly when interacting with paramagnetic O2. We describe a method for in vivo determination of intrapulmonary O2 concentrations ([O2]) based on MRI analysis of the fate of measured amounts of inhaled hyperpolarized3He in imaged regions of the lung. Anesthetized pigs underwent controlled normoventilation in a 1.5-T MRI unit. The inspired O2 fraction was varied to achieve different end-tidal [O2] fractions ([Formula: see text]). With the use of a specifically designed applicator,3He (100 ml, 35–45% polarized) was administered at a predefined time within single …

Closing in on the toxic domain through analysis of a variant Clostridium difficile cytotoxin B

1995

Strain 1470 is the standard typing strain for serogroup F of Clostridium difficile containing both toxin genes, toxA-1470 and toxB-1470. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based approach to the sequencing of the total toxB-1470 gene identified an open reading frame (ORF) of 7104 nucleotides. In comparison with the previously sequenced toxB of C. difficile VP10463, the toxB-1470 gene has 16 additional nucleotides, 13 within the 5'-untranslated region and three within the coding region. The M(r) of ToxB-1470 is 269,262, with an isoelectric point (IP) of 4.16. The equivalent values for ToxB are M(r) 269,709 and IP 4.13. In comparison with ToxB, ToxB-1470 differs primarily in the N-terminal regi…

Taurine in the interphotoreceptor matrix

2014

TAURINE IN THE INTERPHOTORECEPTOR MATRIX Gueli Maria Concetta Dipartimento di Biomedicina Sperimentale e Neuroscienze Cliniche (BioNEC), Università degli Studi di Palermo Taurine (Tau) is the most abundant amino compound free in the retina. It is concentrated in the photoreceptor inner segment, in the outer nuclear layer and in the synapses. The retina synthesizes and receives Tau from choroidal blood via the pigment epithelium (PE). The high content in the retina suggest the possibily of verifying whether it was present in the interphotoreceptor matrix (IPM), which occupies the subretinal space. In this study we have determined the Tau level in the IPM, separating it from other soluble ami…

Overview of first Wendelstein 7-X high-performance operation

2019

Abstract The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injec…
