Hemostatic function in young subjects with central obesity: relationship with left ventricular function.

1995

This study was designed to evaluate coagulation and fibrinolysis activity and their relationship with left ventricular function in young obese subjects with central fat distribution. We assessed coagulation and fibrinolysis activity by evaluation of factor VII activity, fibrinogen and plasminogen, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI), and tissue plasminogen activator antigen basally (tPA1) and after venous occlusion (tPA2). These measures were evaluated in young (< 40 years) obese subjects with central fat distribution (n = 19) and in comparable lean subjects (n = 20). Blood glucose, triglycerides, total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein (apo) A1 and apo B, fas…

Systemic hemostatic agents initiated in trauma patients in the pre-hospital setting: a systematic review

2022

Abstract Purpose The effect of systemic hemostatic agents initiated during pre-hospital care of severely injured patients with ongoing bleeding or traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains controversial. A systematic review and meta-analysis was therefore conducted to assess the effectiveness and safety of systemic hemostatic agents as an adjunctive therapy in people with major trauma and hemorrhage or TBI in the context of developing the Italian National Institute of Health guidelines on major trauma integrated management. Methods PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched up to October 2021 for studies that investigated pre-hospital initiated treatment with systemic hemostati…

Aluminum Chloride versus Electrocauterization in Periapical Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial

2019

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 2 hemostatic agents in periapical surgery and its relationship with patient- and tooth-dependent variables.A prospective study was designed with 2 randomized parallel groups established according to the hemostatic agent used: aluminum chloride or electrocauterization. The surgeon and 2 independent blinded observers examined the initial and final bleeding and recorded it as 0 (no hemorrhage control), 1 (slight but apparent intermittent bleeding), or 2 (complete hemorrhage control). The following patient- and tooth-dependent variables were collected: sex, age, smoking habit, plaque index, and position.Sixty patients with a periapical lesio…

The EHA research roadmap

2021

International audience; In 2016, the European Hematology Association (EHA) published the EHA Roadmap for European Hematology Research(1) aiming to highlight achievements in the diagnostics and treatment of blood disorders, and to better inform European policy makers and other stakeholders about the urgent clinical and scientific needs and priorities in the field of hematology. Each section was coordinated by 1-2 section editors who were leading international experts in the field. In the 5 years that have followed, advances in the field of hematology have been plentiful. As such, EHA is pleased to present an updated Research Roadmap, now including 11 sections, each of which will be published…

The platelets’ perspective to pathogen reduction technologies

2017

A wide variety of clinical conditions, associated with low circulating platelet counts, require platelet transfusion in order to normalize hemostatic function. Although single-donor apheresis platelets bear the lowest risk of transfusion-transmitted infections, pathogen reduction technologies (PRT) are being implemented worldwide to reduce this risk further through inactivation of known, emergent and as yet to be discovered nucleic acid-based pathogens. Human blood platelets are now known to harbor a diverse transcriptome, important to their function and comprised of >5000 protein-coding messenger RNAs and different classes of non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs. Our appreciation of the nu…

Effects of thrombin and of the phospholipase C inhibitor, D609, on the vascularity of the chick chorioallantoic membrane.

2000

Abstract Microvascular corrosion casting was used to assess the effects of thrombin and D609, a phospholipase C inhibitor, on the vascularity of the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). Discs containing vehicle, thrombin or D609 were placed on the CAM of fertilized white Leghorn eggs on Day 9 of gestation and vascularity was assessed on Day 11. Thrombin caused significant increases in the numbers (43%), diameters (5%) and lengths (17%), of both pre- and postcapillaries (first-order vessels by centripetal ordering). Conversely, D609 caused a decrease in the numbers (27%), lengths (12%) and diameters (8%) of first-order vessels. D609 decreased the total vascular volume of first- to th…

Marginal integrity of low-shrinkage and methacrylate-based composite resins: Effect of three different hemostatic agents.

2015

Background: Moisture control is very important in restorative procedures in dentistry. Use of hemostatic agents helps control moisture; however, they might result in changes on enamel and dentin surfaces, affecting composite resin bond quality. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the marginal microleakage of two different composite resins with the use of three different hemostatic agents. Material and Methods: Standardized Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 48 premolars with cervical margins 1 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). The samples were randomly divided into 8 groups. In groups 1 to 4, an etch-and-rinse adhesive (Adper Single …

Clinical impact of diabetes mellitus in patients hospitalized for myocardial infarction

2020

Abstract Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a major cardiovascular risk factor for coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction (MI). Purpose We aimed to assess in-hospital events and time trends in MI patients with and without DM between 2005 and 2016 in Germany. Methods The nationwide German inpatient sample 2005–2016 was used for statistical analysis (source: Research Data Center (RDC) of the Federal Statistical Office and the Statistical Offices of the federal states, DRG Statistics 2005–2016, own calculations). Hospitalized MI patients were stratified for the presence of DM and the impact of DM on in-hospital events was investigated. Results A total of 3,307,703 patients…

Recombinant factor VIII: past, present and future of treatment of hemophilia A.

2018

The development of recombinant factor VIII (rFVIII) was initially driven by the necessity to treat hemophilia A (HA) patients with FVIII concentrates without the risk of transmitting infectious agents. Over the last three decades the safety of rFVIII has been further improved by completely removing animal or human proteins from the manufacturing process, so that patients would not be exposed to known or emerging pathogens. Recent efforts have concentrated on improving the expression of rFVIII, reducing its immunogenicity and enhancing its pharmacokinetic (PK) behavior. These new goals have been possible thanks to the develop-ment of biotechnology and a better knowledge of the function and s…
