Durability of Basalt/Hemp Hybrid Thermoplastic Composites
2019
The Achilles heel of thermoplastic natural fibre composites is their limited durability. The environmental degradation of the mechanical properties of hemp and hemp/basalt hybrid-reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites has been investigated with a special focus on the effects of water ageing and accelerated ageing, including hygrothermal and UV radiation. Modification of the matrix was carried out using a maleic anhydride high-density polyethylene copolymer (MAPE) as a compatibilizer. Hybridization of hemp fibres with basalt fibres and the incorporation of MAPE were found to significantly decrease the water uptake (up to 75%) and increase the retention of mechanical propertie…

ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENERGY PERFORMANCES OF BUILDING PRODUCTS: A WORKING CHAIN BASED ANALYSIS
2014
The present work is aimed at investigating the environmental and energy performances of products to be utilized in buildings. Specifically, marble (Section 1), granite (Section 2) and natural materials (Section 3) will be analyzed. The marble features are here studied on the basis of a field working chain audit. Particularly, two representative firms of the Custonaci productive basin (Trapani) have been considered. Their working chain have been investigated, by the point of view of the energy and materials flows, with a classical Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. Moreover, the social and economic impacts of such materials have also been assessed by means of the Life Cycle Costing (LCC) …
Rheological and nutritional profile of spaghetti and bread fortified with hemp flours
2022
In recent years, the demands of food consumers have changed considerably. Food today is not only intended to satisfy hunger and provide the necessary nutrients, but also to prevent food-related diseases and improve the physical and mental well-being of consumers. Functional foods are formulated to contain healthy components, which when consumed daily as part of the diet, can have beneficial health effects. Cereal-based products, especially pasta and bread, are well suited for adding nutrients. Both bread and pasta, traditionally produced using durum wheat flour, can be prepared also using "non-wheat flours" in variable percentages or by incorporating food by-products, capable of increasing …
Hemp flour, from waste to nutritional and nutraceuticals reuse
2023
One of the main objectives of recent years is to characterize and valorize by-products of agri-food industries, as new sources of bioactive components, from the perspective of a circular economy and a biorefinery approach both for environmental and economic reasons. Hemp flour, obtained from Cannabis sativa seeds, is an example of promising bio-sustainability raw material with a high nutritional value that can be obtained from industrial by-products. From C. sativa seeds is obtained an oil rich in fatty acids, mainly linoleic and α-linolenic acids [1]. After oil extraction, seeds can be ground to obtain edible flour. Foods fortified with these “non-wheat flours” would have an additional sup…
Thermal and structural properties of a hemp–lime biocomposite
2013
Abstract The need to reduce greenhouse gases emission produced by the building sector leads to the research of renewable and less impacting materials that can replace traditional ones. This subject has encouraged new researches on biocomposite concretes with the aim to exploit renewable resources like vegetal fibres intended as materials whose production processes are generally characterized by low costs and energy demand. This biocomposite is obviously much lighter than concrete and, therefore, can be suitably used in such cases where a structure cannot be overloaded, for instance in the realization of a green covering on top of a preexistent building. In this work, a first analysis of the…
Effect of accelerated ageing on the mechanical behaviour of basalt/hemp hybrid composites
2017
The remarkable concerns related to environmental pollution have triggered a lot of studies aimed at decreasing the environmental impact of polymer composites. A possible way to achieve this goal is the replacement of glass fibres with natural ones. In particular, lignocellulosic fibres are of considerable interest because they are renewable resources and are characterized by low cost, low density, thermal and acoustic insulation, biodegradability and recyclability. Despite these favourable attributes, cellulosic fibre reinforced composites do not provide mechanical properties comparable with those of glass fibre composites and, most importantly, their susceptibility to moisture absorption c…
Memoria e coscienza storiografica nella “praefatio” all’«Ystoriola Langobardorum Beneventum degen-tium» di Erchemperto
2023
In this intervention the reading of the "praefatio" at the «Ystoriola Langobardorum Beneventum degentium» by Erchempert, a Lombard historian of the IXth century, is conducted. The examination allows us to observe, as a preliminary, a historian of the High Middle Ages at his “work table”, in the reference to the sources and models and, at the same time, in the clear awareness of the innovative elements that he proposes to highlight through the story of the tragic and fatal decline of the Lombard people of southern Italy. To this are added other connotations that refer to a precise historiographical awareness, such as the high judgment of himself, the profession of truthfulness of the narrati…
Resilience and Parental Burnout Among Finnish Parents During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Variable and Person-Oriented Approaches.
2021
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis, different personality characteristics may have influenced parental well-being in different ways. In the present study, we combined variable and person-oriented approaches and examined relationships between resilience, parental burnout, and perfectionism during the lockdown. We first used structural equation modeling to assess the paths between variables. We then used latent profile analysis to examine different profiles of parents based on resilience, perfectionism, and symptoms of parental burnout. Finally, we examined how these profiles differ in terms of relevant background variables. The results showed that resilience predicted par…
Maternal Affection Moderates the Associations Between Parenting Stress and Early Adolescents’ Externalizing and Internalizing Behavior
2019
The present study investigated the role of parenting stress in early adolescents’ externalizing and internalizing behavior and, particularly, the moderating effect of maternal affection on these associations. The data of 992 early adolescents ([Formula: see text]; 454 girls) and their mothers during the transition from primary school to lower secondary school were analyzed. The results showed that when maternal affection was low, parenting stress was not related to the changes in early adolescents’ externalizing or internalizing behavior. In contrast, when maternal affection was high, low parenting stress related to a decrease and high parenting stress to an increase in such behavior. The …
