The toxicity of Roundup® 360 SL formulation and its main constituents: Glyphosate and isopropylamine towards non-target water photoautotrophs

2010

The toxicity of commercial formulation of Roundup® 360 SL, widely used, nonselective herbicide and its main constituents, glyphosate (PMG), equimolar (1:1) isopropylamine salt of glyphosate (GIPA) and isopropylamine (IPA) was examined towards eight aquatic microphotoautotrophs; seven cyanobacterial strains representing either saline or freshwater communities, and common eukaryotic algae Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck. Autotrophs were cultured 21 days in their appropriate standard media supplemented with various amounts of Roundup®, glyphosate, GIPA and IPA. The determination of the growth of examined photoautotrophs was performed by time-course measurements of total chlorophyll content in ex…

An approach to evaluate the information in chromatographic fingerprints: Application to the optimisation of the extraction and conservation condition…

2015

A new approach is reported for high-performance liquid chromatography to measure the level of information in fingerprints. For this purpose, the concept of peak prominence, which is the protruding part of each visible peak with regard to the valleys that delimit it, was used. The peaks in the fingerprints are ranked according to the areas of the peak prominences, and a threshold is established to discriminate between the significant peaks and those that are irreproducible. The approach was applied to evaluate the impact of several extraction conditions (solvent nature and composition, time and temperature of the treatment, amount of sample, and time and temperature of conservation of the ex…

Efficient Production of Isoflavonoids by Astragalus membranaceus Hairy Root Cultures and Evaluation of Antioxidant Activities of Extracts

2014

In this study, Astragalus membranaceus hairy root cultures (AMHRCs) were established as an attractive alternative source for the efficient production of isoflavonoids (IF). A. membranaceus hairy root line II was screened as the most efficient line and was confirmed by PCR amplification of rolB, rolC and aux1 genes. Culture parameters of AMHRCs were systematically optimized, and five main IF constituents were quali-quantitatively determined by LC-MS/MS. Under optimal conditions, the total IF accumulation of 34 day old AMHRCs was 234.77 μg/g dry weight (DW). This yield was significantly higher compared to that of 3 year old field grown roots (187.38 μg/g DW). Additionally, in vitro antioxidan…

Solid-phase extraction of quaternary ammonium herbicides

2000

This paper highlights recent advances in the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of quaternary ammonium herbicides in water, soil, plant and biological samples. After a brief introduction summarizing the properties of quaternary ammonium herbicides and the difficulties involved in measuring them, attention is paid primarily to solid supports used for isolation and concentration, pre-treatments required for the different matrices, and eluents applied for quantitative desorption of these analytes. The determination techniques used after SPE and applications of the proposed SPE methodology are also briefly discussed.

Is Limonium cavanillesii Erben (Plumbaginaceae) really an extant species?

1999

A new triploid apomictic species (Limonium perplexum) is described from a single coastal locality of E Spain. The new species has been previously confused with L cavanillesii Erben, which is only known from few herbarium specimens and it is believed to be extinct. Overall morphology, chromosome number, and the pollen/stigma combination suggest that L perplexum belongs to the L. duriusculum complex. Based on morphological grounds it is suggested that L. cavanillesii Erben could have been originated through a crossing between L perplexum and L dufourii .

The genusThymus(Lamiaceae) in Sicily

2015

An update on the taxonomy and geographic distribution of the genus Thymus in Sicily is given. This study is based on literature, herbarium and field investigations. In total, five taxa belonging to Thymus sect. Serpyllum (Th. richardii subsp. nitidus, Th. longicaulis and Th. praecox subsp. parvulus) and Th. sect. Hyphodromi (Th. spinulosus and Th. paronychioides) occur in Sicily. For each one, information about taxonomy, habitat, phenology, chromosome number and distribution are provided. Furthermore, the name Thymus pedicillatus Lojac. is here typified. Finally, an analytical key for the identification of the studied taxa is proposed.

Enantiomeric separation of chiral phenoxy acid herbicides by electrokinetic chromatography. Application to the determination of analyte-selector appa…

2001

The enantiomeric resolution of chiral phenoxy acid herbicides was performed by electrokinetic chromatography using a cyclodextrin as chiral pseudophase (CD-EKC). A systematic evaluation of several neutral and charged cyclodextrins was made. Among the cyclodextrins tested, (2-hydroxy)propyl beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) was found to be the most appropriate for the enantioseparation of phenoxy acids. The influence of some experimental conditions, such as nature and pH of the background electrolyte, chiral selector concentration, and temperature, on the enantiomeric separation of phenoxy acids was also studied. The use of a 50 mM electrolyte solution in ammonium formate at pH 5 and a temperat…
