Aspects of Statistics on Innovation in Latvia and Some Guidelines for Its Effective Use

2016

AbstractStatistical data on innovation in Latvia, at a current stage, were applied only to the particular areas of developing and planning of Latvian innovation support strategies. The aim of the paper is to show Latvian innovative performance and to provide proposals on making statistical data on innovations more useful for the analysis of innovativeness of Latvia. Research methods: bibliography review and methods of statistical analysis, such as processing and comparative analysis.

From Extensity to Protensity in CAS: Adding Sounds to Icons

2009

Being aware of the gap between technological offers and user expectations, the paper aims to illustrate the necessity of anthropocentric designs ("user-pulled") and to reveal the dangers of current ICT designs ("technology-pushed"). Since the gap is deepened because of insufficient innovative use of new agent-oriented technology potential, an affordable manner to "invent new Computer-Aided x" application domains is proposed. To substantiate the approach, the domain must be challenging, easy to implement and "as humanist as possible": Computer-Aided Semiosis (CAS). On this background, the paper also presents a new and challenging concept in IT applied research, borrowed from psychology and m…

AirBaltic Case Based Analysis of Potential for Improving Employee Engagement Levels in Latvia through Gamification

2016

Abstract In 2014, airBaltic Corporation introduced a gamified electronic platform called Forecaster with a purpose to increase its employee engagement. The article considers the approach used by the organisation, analyses results, advantages and drawbacks of the organisation, and mainly formulates recommendations for the organisation in order to improve impact on employee engagement through gamification. As a result of the research, the author proposes 8 steps that are useful and applicable to any organisation, and as such those may serve a broader purpose than just improving airBaltic Forecaster tool. The objective of the paper is to draw learnings and put forward suggestions for the organ…

CHANGES OCCURRED IN A PORCELAIN FACTORY DUE TO QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION

2019

The issues approach in this research show the benefits of the implementation of ISO 9001 standard in different companies as well as the importance of certain criteria with respect to customer satisfaction and confidence. This standard specifies requirements for a quality management system and it is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement. The criteria taken into account help to improve the quality management system of the organization. The purpose of this paper is to identify the changes due to the implementation of a quality management system based …

Synergistic Use of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Photoelectrochemical Measurements for Studying Solid State Properties of Anodic HfO2

2017

Within the past years, intense research has been carried out on HfO2 as high k material, promising candidate to replace SiO2 as gate dielectric in CMOS based devices (1), and as metal oxide for resistive random access memory (ReRAM) (2). For both technological applications compact, uniform and flat oxides are necessary, and a detailed understanding of their physical properties as a function of the fabrication conditions is strongly. Hafnia performance can be significantly influenced by carrier trapping taking place at pre-existing precursors states (induced by oxygen vacancies, interstitial ions, impurities acting as dopants), or by self-trapping in a perfect lattice, where the potential we…

On-site Experimental Study of HCFC-22 Substitution with HFCs Refrigerants

2012

Abstract The European Regulation no 2037/2000 has banned manufacturing HCFC refrigerants from January 1st 2010, although its use is allowed up to 2015 if the fluids come from a recycling process. This situation creates the need for developing new working fluids to replace the HCFC in the refrigeration plants now in operation. Among all the HCFCs the R22 is the most widely used in a wide range of applications, especially in air conditioning. This paper presents the results of an experimental analysis comparing the performance of a vapour compression refrigerating unit operating with R22, and its performance in comparison to some HFCs fluids, substituting the former. In particular, the plant …

Human Resource Selection Approaches and Socially Responsible Strategy

2016

Abstract The research focuses on the characterisation of theoretical aspects of human resource (HR) selection approaches and the analysis of these approaches within a socially responsible strategy and in the context of business sustainability creation. The main methods implemented are monographic research, scientific literature analysis, synthesis, and comparison. As a result, the HR selection concept development and application summary was created as well as the importance of HR selection within a socially responsible strategy was characterised.

North American entrepreneurs in Cuba: which entry mode and government affiliation strategy?

2018

Purpose To have success in newly liberalized markets, firms must have a plan of action before resources are committed. What some companies do not realize is that their own entrepreneurial orientation (EO) will dictate their strategies, and performance outcomes, in both their home market and abroad. In order to maximize firm performance in newly liberalized markets (such as Cuba), firms must be able to objectively gauge their own EO. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Within this framework, the present paper will attempt to effectively measure the EO of decision-making managers from US companies that have an interest in entering the Cuban market. A final sam…

Banks Digitalization - A Challenge for the Romanian Banking Sector

2019

Abstract The banking system has undergone several transformations since its beginning up to now, some as a result of adapting to customers’ requirements that have become increasingly sophisticated, and others as a result of the economic and political contexts that have passed, which again – have required its adaptation. Regardless of the situation, the banks have undergone a large digitization process, a process that is now in progress and which in the coming years can cause a significant change in the banking we knew about 10-15 years ago. Through this paper, I propose to analyse the situation of the banking system in terms of adapting to these challenges, at the level of Romania, in the c…

Credit Risk Versus Performance in the Romanian Banking System

2017

Abstract The Romanian banking sector, predominantly governed by the capital of foreign banks, is, as well as other international banking sectors, under the sign of the necessary balance that should exist between risk and performance. This is a result of banks trying to take risks that they can control, given that they need to generate financial results that are satisfactory for all categories of bank creditors, namely shareholders, depositors and other lenders. In this paper, I wanted to analyze the risk situation assumed by the main banks in the system versus the performance gained in recent years. This article is part of a wider research, so I will refer only to the main risk assumed by a…
