Asymptotic properties of Born-improved amplitudes with gauge bosons in the final state

1999

For processes with gauge bosons in the final state we show how to continuously connect with a single Born-improved amplitude the resonant region, where resummation effects are important, with the asymptotic region far away from the resonance, where the amplitude must reduce to its tree-level form. While doing so all known field-theoretical constraints are respected, most notably gauge-invariance, unitarity and the equivalence theorem. The calculations presented are based on the process $f\bar{f}\to ZZ$, mediated by a possibly resonant Higgs boson; this process captures all the essential features, and can serve as a prototype for a variety of similar calculations. By virtue of massive cancel…

Fading of symmetry nonrestoration at finite temperature

1998

The fate of symmetries at high temperature determines the dynamics of the very early universe. It is conceivable that temperature effects favor symmetry breaking instead of restoration. Concerning global symmetries, the non-linear sigma model is analyzed in detail. For spontaneously broken gauge symmetries, we propose the gauge boson magnetic mass as a ``flag'' for symmetry (non)-restoration. We consider several cases: the standard model with one and two Higgs doublets in the perturbative regime, and the case of a strongly interacting Higgs sector. The latter is done in a model independent way with the tools provided by chiral Lagrangians. Our results clearly point towards restoration, a pa…

Neutrino mass and new light gauge boson in superstring models

1987

Abstract The proposal that the neutrino owes the smallness of its mass to the spontaneous breaking of R parity in superstring models with an additional gauge boson coupled to the right-handed neutrino is analysed. The right-handed neutrino can not in general decouple from the low-energy theory in models with supersymmetry at the TeV scale and which possess the light Higgs doublets necessary for generating fermion masses. Experimental limits on neutrino mass then imply an upper limit on the new gauge boson mass m Zr ⪅ 220 GeV.

Precision measurements of electroweak gauge boson parameters at LEP

2000

Abstract Over ten years after the start-up of LEP and four years after the completion of the energy scans around the Z resonance the analyses of the Z parameters by the four experiments Aleph, Delphi and L3 are final and the Opal results are very close to final. The analyses of the polarisation of τ leptons and measurements of the production rates and forward-backward asymmetries in the heavy flavour sector are approaching their finalisation. Recent data taking nearly doubled the statistics of W± pair events available at Lep and lead to significantly improved preliminary measurements of the W± pair production cross section, the W mass and branching fractions as well as improved limits on no…

Constrained SUSY seesaws with a 125 GeV Higgs

2012

Motivated by the ATLAS and CMS discovery of a Higgs-like boson with a mass around 125 GeV, and by the need of explaining neutrino masses, we analyse the three canonical SUSY versions of the seesaw mechanism (type I, II and III) with CMSSM boundary conditions. In type II and III cases, SUSY particles are lighter than in the CMSSM (or the constrained type I seesaw), for the same set of input parameters at the universality scale. Thus, to explain $m_{h^0} \simeq 125 GeV$ at low energies, one is forced into regions of parameter space with very large values of $m_0$, $M_{1/2}$ or $A_0$. We compare the squark and gluino masses allowed by the ATLAS and CMS ranges for $m_{h^0}$ (extracted from the …

Nonperturbative effective model for the Higgs sector of the standard model

2010

A nonperturbative effective model is derived for the Higgs sector of the Standard Model which is described by a simple scalar theory. The renormalized couplings are determined by the derivatives of the Gaussian effective potential that are known to be the sum of infinite bubble graphs contributing to the vertex functions. A good agreement has been found with strong coupling lattice simulations when a comparison can be made.

New Higgs Signatures in Supersymmetry with Spontraneously Broken R Parity"

1992

Higgs production from $Z$ decay in supersymmetry with spontaneous broken R parity proceeds mostly by the Bjorken process as in the standard model. However, the corresponding production rates can be weaker than in the standard model (SM), especially in the low mass region. This will substantially weaken the Higgs boson mass limits derived from LEP1. More strikingly, the main Higgs decay channel is "invisible", over most of the mass range accessible to LEP1, leading to events with large missing energy carried by majorons. This possibility should be taken into account in the planning of Higgs boson search strategies not only at LEP but also at high energy supercolliders.

Factorization and NNLL Resummation for Higgs Production with a Jet Veto

2012

Using methods of effective field theory, we derive the first all-order factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson production cross section with a jet veto, imposed by means of a standard sequential recombination jet algorithm. Like in the case of small-q_T resummation in Drell-Yan and Higgs production, the factorization is affected by a collinear anomaly. Our analysis provides the basis for a systematic resummation of large logarithms log(m_H/p_T^veto) beyond leading-logarithmic order. Specifically, we present predictions for the resummed jet-veto cross section and efficiency at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. Our results have important implications for Higgs-boson searches at the…

Search for the Higgs boson in the H→WW→ℓνjj decay channel at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

2012

A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson has been performed in the H→WW→lνjj channel using 4.7 fb^(−1) of pp collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Higgs boson candidates produced in association with zero, one or two jets are included in the analysis to maximize the acceptance for both gluon fusion and weak boson fusion Higgs boson production processes. No significant excess of events is observed over the expected background and limits on the Higgs boson production cross section are derived for a Higgs boson mass in the range 300 GeV<m_H<600 GeV. The best sensitivity is reached for m_H=400 GeV, where the obse…
