Scaling and Noise in Slow Combustion of Paper

We present results of high resolution experiments on kinetic roughening of slow combustion fronts in paper, focusing on short length and time scales. Using three different grades of paper, we find that the combustion fronts show apparent spatial and temporal multiscaling at short scales. The scaling exponents decrease as a function of the order of the corresponding correlation functions. The noise affecting the fronts reveals short range temporal and spatial correlations, and non-Gaussian noise amplitudes. Our results imply that the overall behavior of slow combustion fronts cannot be explained by standard theories of kinetic roughening. Peer reviewed

Photometric and Hα Observations of LSI+61°303

The Be massive X-ray binary LSI+61°303 is a 26.5 days periodic radiosource (Taylor & Gregory, 1984), exhibiting radio outbursts maxima between phases 0.6-0.8. Evidence of a photometric period of similar value has also been reported (Paredes & Figueras, 1986; Mendelson & Mazeh, 1989). The previous spectroscopic radial velocity observations of Hutchings & Crampton (1981) are in agreement with the radio period, and give support to the presence of a companion. We present new optical and infrared photometric observations and high resolution Hα spectra of LSI+61°303.

High resolution study of the and “hot” bands and ro-vibrational re-analysis of the polyad of the 32SO2 molecule

Abstract The weak “hot” absorption bands, ν 1 + 2 ν 2 − ν 2 and 2 ν 2 + ν 3 − ν 2 , were analysed with high resolution using the Fourier transform interferometer Bruker IFS-120 HR. In order to make possible an analysis of the ν 1 + 2 ν 2 − ν 2 and 2 ν 2 + ν 3 − ν 2 bands, as the first step, we re-analysed considerably the stronger “cold” bands, ν 1 + ν 2 and ν 2 + ν 3 , which are located in the same spectral regions. As the result of analysis we obtained about 2650 and 2050 transitions (1069 and 1001 upper state ro-vibrational energy values) with Jmax. = 78, Kamax. = 27 and Jmax. = 68, Kamax. = 24 for the bands ν 1 + ν 2 and ν 2 + ν 3 , respectively, that is considerably higher than in the …

High‐Resolution X‐Ray Spectroscopy of the Post–T Tauri Star PZ Telescopii

We present an analysis of the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer observation of the rapidly rotating P_(rot)=0.94 d post T Tauri (~20 Myr old) star PZ Telescopii, in the Tucana association. Using two different methods we have derived the coronal emission measure distribution, em(T), and chemical abundances. The em(T) peaks at log T = 6.9 and exhibits a significant emission measure at temperatures log T > 7. The coronal abundances are generally ~0.5 times the solar photospheric values that are presumed fairly representative of the composition of the underlying star. High-resolution study of some doubly excited vibrational states of PH2D: the m1 + m2, m2 + m5, m2 + m3, and m2 + m6 bands

Abstract The absorption bands ν 1 + ν 2 , ν 2 + ν 3 , and ν 2 + ν 6 of PH 2 D have been recorded for the first time using a high-resolution Bruker 120 HR interferometer, and rotationally analyzed. Some transitions belonging to the very weak band ν 2 + ν 5 and enhanced in intensity by strong interactions with the ν 1 + ν 2 band were also assigned. Sets of parameters obtained from the fit reproduce experimental line position of the bands ν 1 + ν 2 and ν 2 + ν 3 with about the experimental accuracy. The residuals of the ro-vibrational energies of the ν 2 + ν 6 band are about 10 times larger. Reasons for the poorer reproduction of the latter data are given.

The Intensities of Methane in the 3–5 μm Region Revisited

The analysis of the linestrengths of the infrared spectrum of methane (12 and 13) in the 3-5 µm region has been revisited on the basis of new measurements from Fourier transform spectra recorded at Kitt Peak under various optical densities. A simultaneous fit of these new data with previously reported tunable difference-frequency laser data has been done. An effective transition moment model in tensorial form up to the third order of approximation within the Pentad scheme has been used. Two-Dimensional Boundary Layer Equations: High Resolution Capturing Methods

In this paper we apply the piecewise hyperbolic and parabolic essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) capturing schemes (see [2] and [4]) to approximate the solution to the boundary layer equations for two-dimensional incompressible flow. We have tested several numerical examples analyzing their resolutive power and efficiency with respect to small values of the kinematic viscosity of the flow.

A liquid gas target system for medium energy electron scattering

Abstract A liquid gas target system is described, which is suitable for high resolution electron scattering experiments at medium energies. The liquid gas chamber of the target system has, for ease of comparison with solid targets, the form of a thin-walled flat box 2 mm in thickness. The position of the target assembly can be changed by remote control.
