Intrinsic defects induced by β-irradiation in silica

2002

We report an electron paramagnetic resonance study of defects induced by β-irradiation in natural and synthetic samples of high purity commercial silica. Data are collected for the E′ centers and a resonance satellite signal split by 1.36 mT. By comparison with the effects of γ-irradiation it is shown that the mechanisms of defect generation are the same for the two irradiation sources and that in the high-dose limit they involve intrinsic defects of the glassy matrix. Moreover, the high concentration of defects generated by β-irradiation modifies the EPR spectrum due to spin–spin interaction.

Comparative analysis of major travel and tourism indicators: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, 2010

2011

Osmotic conditions in rheologic properties of erytrocites

2001

Abstract The decreasing viability and in vivo survival of red blood cells, RBCs, observed in blood bank-storage are due to alterations in their rheologic properties and metabolic status. However, there is a lack of electrokinetic experiments with erythrocytes by the screening produced by the high concentration of buffer required to keep the isoosmotic conditions. Electrokinetic measurements in a wide range of sodium chloride and tetrasodium pyrophosphate are undertaken on liposomes as cell models, and in order to get an aqueous media suitable for maintaining osmotic conditions and allowing electrophoretic mobility measurements as well, advantage has been taken of dextrose properties. Measur…

Board Evaluation in Italian Listed Companies

2016

In the last decade performance evaluation of the Board of Directors has become a best practice at national and international level. Italy is an interesting area of analysis given the high concentration of ownership that characterizes companies, including listed companies. In this context the choices of governance that affect the level of disclosure, for which the expectation is to have a low level of disclosure on the practice of BE (Board Evaluation). The first purpose of this paper is to present a resume on the state of the art in terms of BE for Italian listed companies at 31st December 2012, in terms of presence/absence of the practice of disclosure and its more or less extensive disclos…

Drug connectivity mapping and functional analysis reveal therapeutic small molecules that differentially modulate myelination

2022

Disruption or loss of oligodendrocytes (OLs) and myelin has devastating effects on CNS function and integrity, which occur in diverse neurological disorders, including Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease and neuropsychiatric disorders. Hence, there is a need to develop new therapies that promote oligodendrocyte regeneration and myelin repair. A promising approach is drug repurposing, but most agents have potentially contrasting biological actions depending on the cellular context and their dose-dependent effects on intracellular pathways. Here, we have used a combined systems biology and neurobiological approach to identify compounds that exert positive and negative effects on olig…

Performance Analysis of a Prototype High‐Concentration Photovoltaic System Coupled to Silica Optical Fibers

2021

High-concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) systems are one of the most promising technologies for the generation of renewable energy with high-conversion efficiency. Their development is still at an early stage, but the possibility of integrating high-concentration systems into buildings offers new opportunities to achieve the net-zero-energy building goal. Herein, the optical and energetic performance of a hybrid daylighting−HCPV prototype based on pure- or doped-silica optical fibers (OFs) to guide 2000× concentrated sunlight inside the buildings is evaluated. There, the light can either be used to illuminate interior spaces or projected on solar cells to generate electricity. The system equi…

An efficient probe for sensing different concentration ranges of glutathione based on AIE-active Schiff base nanoaggregates with distinct reaction me…

2018

Abstract A novel tetraphenylethene-diketopyrrolopyrrole Schiff base (TPE-DPP) was synthesized by one-pot protocol. Based on thiol group and acid-base property of glutathione, nanoaggregates of TPE-DPP for sensitive and selective detection of diff ;erent concentration ranges of glutathione by two distinct reaction mechanisms was reported. It showed a turn-on mode of fluorescence signals towards low concentration of GSH by hydrolysis of TPE-DPP, but a ratiometric mode of fluorescence signal was elicited towards high concentration of GSH by addition reaction of thiol with TPE-DPP. What’s more, the probe was successfully utilized for monitoring GSH in living cells.

Effectiveness of dental bleaching in depth after using different bleaching agents

2012

Objectives: This study evaluated the effectiveness of low- and high-concentration bleaching agents on enamel and deep dentin. Study design: Stained bovine incisors fragments were randomized placed into 10 groups (n=5), according to the sample thicknesses (2.0 mm or 3.5 mm) and bleaching agent: 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) (4 h a day/21 days); 6% hydrogen peroxide (HP) with calcium (1:30 h a day/21 days); HP 20% with calcium (50 min a day/3 sessions with a 7-day interval); HP 35% (3 x 15 min a day/3 sessions with a 7-day interval); HP 35% with calcium (40 min a day/3 sessions with a 7-day interval). The samples were stored in artificial saliva during the experiment. The co - lor change was ev…

Calcium effect on enhanced biological phosphorus removal.

2006

The role of calcium (Ca) in enhanced biological phosphorus removal and its possible implications on the metabolic pathway have been studied. The experience has been carried out in an SBR under anaerobic–aerobic conditions for biological phosphorus removal during 8 months. The variations of influent Ca concentration showed a clear influence on the EBPR process, detecting significant changes in YPO4. These YPO4 variations were not due to influent P/COD ratio, pH, denitrification and calcium phosphate formation. The YPO4 has been found to be highly dependent on the Ca concentration, increasing as Ca concentration decreases. The results suggest that high Ca concentrations produce “inert” granul…
