Microalgae-bacteria consortia in high-rate ponds for treating urban wastewater: Elucidating the key state indicators under dynamic conditions

2020

[EN] On-line performance indicators of a microalgae-bacteria consortium were screened out from different variables based on pH and dissolved oxygen on-line measurements via multivariate projection analysis, aiming at finding on-line key state indicators to easily monitor the process. To fulfil this objective, a pilot-scale high-rate pond for urban wastewater treatment was evaluated under highly variable conditions, i.e. during the start-up period. The system was started-up without seed of either bacterial or microalgal biomass. It took around 19 days to fully develop a microalgal community assimilating nutrients significantly. Slight increases in the biomass productivities in days 26-30 sug…

Integration of animal health and public health surveillance sources to exhaustively inform the risk of zoonosis: An application to visceral leishmani…

2019

Abstract Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a parasitic disease that is endemic in more than 80 countries, and leads to high fatality rates when left untreated. We investigate the relationship of VL cases in dogs and human cases, specifically for evidence of VL in dogs leading to excess cases in humans. We use surveillance data for dogs and humans for the years 2007–2011 to conduct both spatial and spatio-temporal analyses. Several models are evaluated incorporating varying levels of dependency between dog and human data. Models including dog data show marginal improvement over models without; however, for a subset of spatial units with ample data, models provide concordant risk classification …

Brief communication. Stable Drosophila buzzatii-Drosophila koepferae hybrids

1998

Previous experiments discovered high rates of chromosomal rearrangements in the progeny of males containing a telomeric segment of Drosophila koepferae in a D. buzzatii genetic background (segmental males). We have performed similar experiments, designed to test whether this chromosomal instability could be explained by a phenomenon similar to P-M hybrid dysgenesis or, alternatively, by a generalized telomeric effect. However, the results obtained have not allowed us to fully characterize this process, because we have not observed chromosomal rearrangements in the progeny of the putative unstable males. Our results suggest that chromosomal instability is independent of the introgressed frag…

Comparing the cycling behaviours of Australian, Chinese and Colombian cyclists using a behavioural questionnaire paradigm.

2020

Cyclists are vulnerable road users and face disproportionately high rates of road trauma, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Behaviour of road users is a system outcome, and thus studying cyclist behaviours can identify problems in the whole road transport system and assist in generating long-lasting, cost-effective solutions to promote cyclist safety. This study aims to investigate the similarities and disparities of cycling behaviour among countries with different income levels and cycling prevalence, and the relationships among cyclist demographic characteristics, behaviours and crash involvement. It applies the Cycling Behaviour Questionnaire (CBQ) to measure the behaviour …

Mitochondria and Ageing

2018

Mitochondria are the major sites of oxygen utilisation for energy production in cells. Indeed, all the reactions of the Krebs’ Cycle take place in mitochondria and they produce NADH and succinate, which are then oxidised in the respiratory chain. Experiments dating back to the early part of the twentieth century seemed to indicate that at a high rate of oxygen consumption (referred to gram of body weight) was normally associated with a low maximum lifespan. Thus, it was thought that it was the rate of oxygen utilisation that was related to “the rate of living”. However, more recent data pointed out that birds are unique because they combine high rates of oxygen consumption with a high maxim…

High rate concentration measurement of molecular gas mixtures using a spatial detection technique

2010

International audience; Concentration measurement in molecular gas mixtures using a snapshot spatial imaging technique is reported. The approach consists of measuring the birefringence of the molecular sample when field-free alignment takes place, each molecular component producing a signal with an amplitude depending on the molecular density. The concentration measurement is obtained on a single-shot basis by probing the time-varying birefringence through femtosecond time-resolved optical polarigraphy (FTOP). The relevance of the method is assessed in air.

Reaktionskinetik der polymerisationshemmung durch molekularen sauerstoff. (Versuche mit methylmethacrylat)

1956

Facing EL teachers' burnout through motivation

2019

The educational institutions in many countries are faced with the  major problem of teacher burnout causing  high rates of  attrition and absenteeism. There is widespread agreement among researchers that  teacher burnout can effectively be countered through emphasis on  teacher motivation.  This article is about a 2-year qualitative research carried out by an English language teacher who focused on how to cope successfully with potential burnout conditions through a mutually reinforcing cycle of teacher and student motivation activated by the implementation of a Postmethod  emotion-focused pedagogical framework and the emphasis on the quality of life in the English classroom.

Kinetik der energieverbrauchenden Rückreaktion in der Atmungskette

1964
