The nature of radiohaloes in biotite: Experimental studies and modeling

Several micro-techniques (confocal laser-Raman microprobe, optical absorption micro-spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis) were employed in the detailed characterization of radiohaloes in biotites from two Variscan rocks from Germany. The studied biotites are intermediate members of the phlogopite-annite series with Mg/Fe 2+ ratios in the range 1.6–1.0. Radiohaloes in biotite resulted from the impact of 4 He cores (α-particles) emitted from actinide-bearing inclusions. Estimation of sea surface temperature from SEVIRI data: algorithm testing and comparison with AVHRR products

Three surface temperature (ST) algorithms for Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) data are developed and tested. A general split window algorithm for ST estimation, a sea surface temperature (SST) algorithm and a nonlinear algorithm (NLSST) developed for SEVIRI data. The test was carried out by comparing SEVIRI data with two types of data: (a) in situ and (b) obtained with the NLSST algorithm applied to Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). The field campaign was carried out over sea using a thermal radiometer. Abstract To assist ongoing investigations of the limits of the tradeoff between spatial resolution and noise in PET imaging, several PET instruments based on silicon-pad detectors have been developed. The latest is a segment of a dual-ring device to demonstrate that excellent reconstructed image resolution can be achieved with a scanner that uses highresolution detectors placed close to the object of interest or surrounding a small field-of-view in combination with detectors having modest resolution at larger radius. Structure determination and homogeneous optical properties of CdS/HgS quantum dots

The structural and optical properties of heterogeneous semiconductor nanoparticles consisting of CdS and HgS are investigated by High Resolution Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and selective spectroscopy like Hole Burning (HB) and Fluorescence Line Narrowing (FLN). The HRTEM study shows that epitaxy is possible in nanocrystals, provided the crystallites have well defined faceted shapes to begin with. From the HB- and FLN experiments homogeneous absorption and fluorescence spectra are calculated. It could be shown that the absorption is coupled to HgS-like phonons (250 cm -1 ) whereas the emission frequency is closer to the LO phonon frequency of CdS.

During the last decade, we have blended our individual skills to form a research group devoted to investigating active crustal deformation in areas adjacent to the coast of Southern Italy, with the aim to bridge the gap between the onshore and offshore realms. Our research is based on a multi-scale and multi-resolution approach that includes high-resolution seismics, coastal morpho-tectonics and structural geology, complemented by seismicity, Global Positioning System and InSAR. Resurgent calderas are among the largest and most dynamic volcanic structures on earth. They are typically associated with major eruptions with considerable volumes of pyroclastic deposits accompanied by large collapse structures and late stage deformation and uplift of the intra-caldera floor region. Seismic stratigraphic analysis of very high-resolution single channel reflection seismic profiles provided insights into the last ~10 ka vertical deformation pattern in the submerged part of the Campi Flegrei resurgent caldera, off the Pozzuoli Bay. Seismogenic fault models and active deformation ones coupled with models of both earthquake rate and earthquake probability were recently used in a time-independent modelling. The integration of models allows to estimates the magnitude, location, and likelihood of potentially damaging earthquake ruptures in regions with high natural seismic hazard. Improvements of these models imply the recognition of the spatial geometry of the larger, active faults, deemed to be the source of the most damaging future earthquakes.
