Domain-specific understanding of digitally represented graphs is necessary for successful learning within and across domains in higher education. Two recent studies conducted a cross-sectional analysis of graph understanding in different contexts (physics and finance), task concepts, and question types among students of physics, psychology, and economics. Abstract A person-oriented approach was used to investigate what types of achievement strategy people apply in university environments, and how these are associated with their academic achievement, related satisfaction and personal well-being. Two hundred and fifty-four undergraduates filled in first the Cartoon-Attribution-Strategy Test, the Strategy and Attribution Questionnaire, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale and the revised Beck's Depression Inventory at the beginning of their studies, and one year later an academic satisfaction scale. In this chapter, I explore the encounters between music and participants in learning environments. The encounters I refer to are situations when a teacher or instructor presents music intending to involve participants in responsive activities. The activities can be dialogues about music and meaning, creative music-making or construction of performances, the writing of poems or narratives inspired by the music, creating dances based on the music or singing or playing a selected repertoire. Position of text and discourse analysis in higher education policy research

The article sets out to address the position of text and discourse analysis in higher education policy research, both from theoretical and methodological points of view. Theoretically, the article presents policy processes as discursive processes, arguing that higher education policies are constructed discursively. Methodologically, the article suggests that when policy documents are used as data, as is often the case in higher education policy research, text analytical tools should be applied more systematically than is the case now. To support these views, the article presents two cases of applications of a textual approach in higher education policy studies.

In this chapter, Management as Intervention, Richard Ennals presents ideas on an alternative perspective on management. The chapter seeks to apply ideas of sustainability, which is seen as mutual competence building development, to business management and business education. Management is presented in the context of the project “Higher Education in a Sustainable Society”. During public speaking, a significant increase in heart rate level above the baseline has been found in various studies. In these studies, arousal styles during speaking have generally been described on the basis of mean heart rates among a group of participants. Nonverbal immediacy and cognitive learning: A cross‐cultural investigation

The current research was based on data drawn from the cultures of Australia, Finland, and Puerto Rico as well as the dominant United States culture. The direction of the relationship between immediacy and perceived cognitive learning did not differ among the cultures studied (a very positive relationship exists within each culture). However, the magnitude of the relationships varied substantially. The results support the theory that in highly immediate cultures the expectations for immediate teacher behavior are very high and violations of those expectations by being less immediate may be very detrimental to cognitive learning. Nonverbal immediacy of teachers has been demonstrated to be substantially associated with increased cognitive and affective learning in students. The assumption underlying the current research is that teacher communication behaviors that enhance student learning will also enhance positive evaluations of teachers by those students.
