Is (Was) Mathematics an Art or a Science?

2018

If you teach in a department like mine, the answer to this timeless question may actually carry consequences that seriously affect the resources your program will have available to teach mathematics in the future. In Mainz, no one is likely to protest that mathematics has long been counted as part of the Naturwissenschaften (natural sciences). If it were part of the Geisteswissenschaften (humanities), this would probably have serious budgetary implications. Of course most mathematics departments are now facing a far more immediate and pressing issue, one that can perhaps be boiled down to a different question: is mathematics closer to (a) an art form or (b) a form of computer science? If yo…

MINE - Mobile Learning in Higher Education

2018

Mobile technologies are an important part of our daily life and we carry them with us all the time. Mobile learning is already used a lot in informal and non-formal learning, but in the context of formal learning it is not much used, yet. In the area of formal learning at universities, there is a great need for pedagogic scenarios to encourage educatorsto use these new technologies. It is suggested that educators will need to move beyond the didactic approaches still frequently found in higher education. Social constructivist approaches have been advocated, along with the development of communities of practice to support educators. In addition, more emphasis on learners is required, to unde…

IRT Modeling of Decomposed Student Learning Patterns in Higher Education Economics

2019

Researchers have spent decades arguing how to measure improvements in learning within formal settings, where achievements are intended and presupposed, in a reliable and valid way. Repeated measures are required to investigate improvements of any kind. Students usually take a multiple-choice test at least twice with the difference between the two measurements indicating how much they have learned. Walstad and Wagner (J Econ Educ 47:121–131, 2016) presented a new approach to gathering more information about different learning patterns by decomposing these difference measures. They describe the patterns of positive learning (PL) and negative learning (NL), i.e., the development from not knowi…

Supporting teachers' needs within and through E-learning systems

2014

These days more and more digital learning and teaching opportunities emerge into the world of higher education. In this upcoming project which is described in this paper, the teachers' needs, especially their teaching motivation will be regarded. This project is part of a bigger project, where several different faculties will work together. This combination of faculties is beneficial for topics like these, because the approach combines pedagogical and technical knowledge. This topic regarding teachers' needs deals with the initial and ongoing motivation as well as behavior and attitudes toward current or upcoming ICT systems for education. The main aspect of the project is to specify issues…

For this reason, perceived time value is added to the Technology Acceptance Model. Design/methodology/approach. Data are collected from a purposive sample of 147 individuals, who were interested to continue their higher education. Both, online and personal surveys are used to collect data. Achieved data are analysed by structural equation modelling. Findings. The results show that the perceived time value is significantly related to the ease of use and perceived utility, which in turn, show a signifi…

Scripted Collaboration and Group‐Based Variations in a Higher Education CSCL Context

2009

Scripting student activities is one way to make Computer‐Supported Collaborative Learning more efficient. This case study examines how scripting guided student group activities and also how different groups interpreted the script; what kinds of roles students adopted and what kinds of differences there were between the groups in terms of their activities. Seven small groups of higher education students participated in the study. According to the findings, scripting enhanced collaboration and ensured that all groups were able to complete the task, but despite the script the groups' activities varied during the task and the script could not guarantee any “high‐level” participation by all stud…
