Feedback on individual academic presentations: exploring Finnish university students’ experiences and preferences
2015
With an increasing emphasis on measuring the outcomes of learning in higher education, assessment is gaining an ever more prominent role in curriculum design and development as well as in instructional practices. In formative assessment, feedback is regarded as a powerful pedagogical tool driving student engagement and deep learning. The efficacy of feedback, however, depends on a multitude of factors. From a learning cultures perspective (James 2014), assessment strives for an appropriate balance between structural constraints and individual agency. To have a better grasp of how feedback functions in practice, it is useful to investigate students’ views and preferences as well as the immed…

The Role Of Students’ Competences For Mobility In Higher Education
2019
Mobility programmes in higher education have become an option for academic development and a driver of future professional careers of Spanish university students. In particular, the study was carried out through a questionnaire that analyses whether students participating in the course (first edition) show intercultural and transversal competencies that encourage a positive a…
Developing Moral Competence in Higher Education
2014
In the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), moral and ethical competence is nearly absent from curricula development criteria. The recovery and incorporation of moral competence is an essential reflection: by integrating the ethical or moral dimensions of knowledge with the intellectual and technical dimensions, higher education can more effectively respond to the needs of society. This chapter affirms that the concept of habit offers an innovative perspective on human behavior that can contribute towards a more complete understanding and development of the concept of competence, and specifically of “moral competence” for both the sciences and social sciences.
Conclusions – The Institutional and Organisational Layers of Finnish Higher Education
2019
The concluding chapter of the book discusses contemporary Finnish universities from the perspective of historical layers, which have accumulated over time and have laid the foundation on which new ideas, processes, and structures have been built and which they have also sought to challenge. According to the author, multiple historical layers can be found in teaching, research, and institutional decision-making and administration. He shows how in academic contexts, different historical layers easily support each other, whereas in organisational decision-making, management, and administration, different mentalities, practices, processes, and goals often lead to tensions.

These schools and institutes are the following (in the order in which they were established): Hamina Cadet School, Mustiala Agricultural School/College, the Polytechnic School/Institute, teacher training colleges (or seminaries), and business schools/colleges.
