Higher Education in the BRICS: Key Lessons and the Road Ahead
2015
The assumptions, by the volume editors and most contributors, at the beginning of this research adventure were that, despite the ongoing policy discourse surrounding the rise of the BRICS, were characterized by fundamental differences as regards the dynamics within the higher education sector and the links with societal actors on the one hand and macro level trends (such as demography and rising urbanization) on the other. The rich empirical accounts provided in this volume—around the four main themes surveyed—suggest that our assumptions were largely correct. Considerable differences do exist amongst the BRICS.
Are We Really Teaching English for Specific Purposes, or Basic English Skills? The Cases of Turkey and Latvia
2018
English for specific purposes (ESP) has evolved as an important sub-field of English language education to meet the career-related needs of non-native speakers of English in a wide variety of contexts. As such, ESP instruction in specialized subject areas ranging from vocational (e.g., tourism and hospitality) to professional (e.g., international law or banking) to academic (e.g., thesis and dissertation writing) is often integrated in the training and degree programs offered at higher education institutions. However, the ability of these institutions to provide adequate ESP instruction has often been called into question, with critics indicating that insufficient resources and planning, la…
Formacion competencial para la intervención comunitaria = Competency-based training in community work
2012
2019
This research is based on an analytical model designed to evaluate the institutional conditions that affect the development of teaching in Ibero-America. The case studies correspond to six universities in: Argentina, Spain, Mexico and Venezuela 2. Were identified the common challenges and the differentiated needs faced by the development, with quality, of university teaching. It was concluded that the context is a predominant variable that impacts the exercise of the teaching function and that this is the most important academic activity with an impact on the quality of higher education. Esta investigación se realizó con base en un modelo analítico diseñado para evaluar las condiciones inst…
Difficulties in Teaching Modelling: A French-Spanish Exploration
2017
An exploratory research study based on an online questionnaire in order to better understand difficulties encountered in teaching of mathematical modelling in France and Spain is presented. This questionnaire takes into account biographical variables, mathematics and modelling conceptions of pre-service teachers, teachers, researchers and education inspectors, from primary to tertiary education. Regarding difficulties, heterogeneous conceptions are revealed, and the analysis constructs four clusters, from positive and confident conceptions to negative and lacking confidence. In some cases, the roles of some biographical variables are indicated such as country, age, gender or school level th…

Fighting the Crocodiles: Immigrant Students and Their Perilous Routes at Campus
2018
This article is about what institutional frameworks do to our immigrant students, or how such frames may open or close opportunities. As my text unfolds, my students will speak. What stories do they provide us with? and What stories pass unnoticed? This text is also about voice and academic texts as muted lives, or as flat versions on a felt board.
Contemporary art in higher education: creative pedagogies in political economy
2019
Abstract We propose that contemporary art, which reflects the problems and attitudes of our times, can be used as a way of promoting creativity in disciplines that are not traditionally associated with the arts. Whilst contemporary art is being used as a learning and teaching aid in higher education in a small number of disciplines, it is not normally used in disciplines dominated by rational discourse; an example is economics, on which we focus. We begin by reviewing the literature on art, education and creativity. We then perform an activity with students taking political economy. Students are given the task of selecting a work of contemporary art which “speaks” to them about political ec…
The French Higher Education Landscape
2016
The French higher education system is characterized by its recent move towards the Bologna process with the autonomy granted to university and the adoption of the 3-5-8 (Bachelor, Master, PhD) architecture, and its enduring dualism between public universities and Grandes Ecoles with heated discussions concerning the efficiency of the system and the existence of possible research synergies between the two parallel systems. Public universities are currently undergoing a vast transformation process with the creation of the COMUE and clusters of competiveness. A SWOT analysis hints at the urgent need for French higher education institutions to adapt to the demands of internationalization and gl…
