Use of a running coupling in the NLO calculation of forward hadron production

We address and solve a puzzle raised by a recent calculation [1] of the cross-section for particle production in proton-nucleus collisions to next-to-leading order: the numerical results show an un- reasonably large dependence upon the choice of a prescription for the QCD running coupling, which spoils the predictive power of the calculation. Specifically, the results obtained with a prescription formulated in the transverse coordinate space differ by one to two orders of magnitude from those obtained with a prescription in momentum space. AbstractThis chapter analyses how the increasing external research project funding has affected the authority over research for managers and researchers in Nordic universities. Drawing on both the qualitative and quantitative data from the FINNUT project, the chapter uses institutional theory to investigate how authority relations between managers and researcher unfold by focusing on the themes content, time, and people. Power, Institutions, and Periphery: What Can a Small University College Do?

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are seen as key sources for innovation, global competitiveness, and regional development despite their location. The chapter discusses the institutionalised practice of an HEI located in a peripheral region with many regional development challenges. The main finding is that the HEI acted as a powerful political actor in the region but within the educational path. It was taken for granted that the HEI should not engage in regional development efforts by the HEI and regional actors in the region. This behaviour is explained as a result of an institutional control mechanism that governs how HEI should practise their role.

Monadic second-order logic over pictures and recognizability by tiling systems

We show that a set of pictures (rectangular arrays of symbols) is recognized by a finite tiling system if and only if it is definable in existential monadic second-order logic. As a consequence, finite tiling systems constitute a notion of recognizability over two-dimensional inputs which at the same time generalizes finite-state recognizability over strings and matches a natural logic. The proof is based on the Ehrenfeucht-FraIsse technique for first-order logic and an implementation of “threshold counting” within tiling systems.

The aim of this study was to to describe students’ perceptions on problem-based learning (PBL) when applied in a course of Psychometrics. 34 students participated in the course. Activities were conducted in groups of three students during two sessions of two hours each, and included the traditional steps in the PBL tutorial process.
