Immunity and other defenses in pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum
2010
Background Recent genomic analyses of arthropod defense mechanisms suggest conservation of key elements underlying responses to pathogens, parasites and stresses. At the center of pathogen-induced immune responses are signaling pathways triggered by the recognition of fungal, bacterial and viral signatures. These pathways result in the production of response molecules, such as antimicrobial peptides and lysozymes, which degrade or destroy invaders. Using the recently sequenced genome of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum), we conducted the first extensive annotation of the immune and stress gene repertoire of a hemipterous insect, which is phylogenetically distantly related to previously ch…
Gut microbiota imbalance and colorectal cancer
2016
International audience; The gut microbiota acts as a real organ. The symbiotic interactions between resident micro-organisms and the digestive tract highly contribute to maintain the gut homeostasis. However, alterations to the microbiome caused by environmental changes (e.g., infection, diet and/or lifestyle) can disturb this symbiotic relationship and promote disease, such as inflammatory bowel diseases and cancer. Colorectal cancer is a complex association of tumoral cells, non-neoplastic cells and a large amount of micro-organisms, and the involvement of the microbiota in colorectal carcinogenesis is becoming increasingly clear. Indeed, many changes in the bacterial composition of the g…
TLR3-independent activation of mast cells by cytomegalovirus contributes to control of pulmonary infection.
2017
Interstitial pneumonia is a life-threatening clinical manifestation of human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) infection. In particular, it can be deadly in patients with hematopoietic malignancies who undergo hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in whom a ‘window of risk’, which is defined by transient immunodeficiency, occurs between hematoablative therapeutic treatment and immunological reconstitution. As few clinical studies have addressed the underlying mechanisms for this phenomenon, a mouse model of HCT and murine cytomegalovirus (mCMV) infection has been established and has revealed a key role for antiviral CD8+ T cells in controlling pulmonary infections. Using this mouse model, recent st…
New waves underneath the purple strain.
2016
Summary Successful merging of chemical and biotechnological operations is essential to achieve cost‐efficient industrialization of bio‐based processes. The demonstration of the use of syngas, derived from microwave assisted pyrolysis of municipal solid waste, for the improved growth and poly‐3‐hydroxybutyrate production in Rhodospirillium rubrum, stands out as an example of the synergistic contribution of chemical engineering and applied microbiology to sustainable biomaterial manufacturing, paving the way to similar applications for other syngas derived bioproducts.
Impaired Kupffer Cell Self-Renewal Alters the Liver Response to Lipid Overload during Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis
2020
International audience; Kupffer cells (KCs) are liver-resident macrophages that self-renew by proliferation in the adult independently from monocytes. However, how they are maintained during non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) remains ill defined. We found that a fraction of KCs derived from Ly-6C+ monocytes during NASH, underlying impaired KC self-renewal. Monocyte-derived KCs (MoKCs) gradually seeded the KC pool as disease progressed in a response to embryo-derived KC (EmKC) death. Those MoKCs were partly immature and exhibited a pro-inflammatory status compared to EmKCs. Yet, they engrafted the KC pool for the long term as they remained following disease regression while acquiring matur…
Does dietary salt induce autoimmunity?
2013
Two recent publications suggest that dietary salt may polarize TH17 cells and therefore increase the risk of developing autoimmune disease. Where low salt diets can readily be tested for their therapeutic effects in autoimmune disease, more work is needed to connect dietary salts with the development of immunopathology.
Neutralidad y honorabilidad del árbitro: : De la ética a la diligencia
2021
One of the main principles of arbitration is that the arbitral tribunal must be independent, impartial, neutral and diligent in carrying out its duties throughout the arbitration proceedings. However, the sophistication and complexity of arbitration as an extra-judicial dispute resolution procedure can undermine confidence in the efficiency of the system. In this regard, the professional (arbitral) ethics and the honourability of the arbitrator are of major importance. This article aims to highlight the importance of the neutrality of the arbitrator, the integrity of the arbitration and the reputation of this procedure
Italian assisted negotiation: an additional tool to settle matrimonial property regime cases
2021
The assisted negotiation procedure highlighted the need to distinguish the various forms of justice in view to obtaining decisions that can effectively satisfy the interests of the family. In fact the agreements who discipline the family conflicts attributes a central role to the will of the couple in the collaborative search for suitable solutions for the management of the crisis of the emotional bond.
Primeras consideraciones a la Ley Orga?nica 3/2021, de 24 de marzo, de regulación de la eutanasia. el reconocimiento de un nuevo derecho
2021
The aim of this paper is to carry out a brief study of the recent Organic Law 3/2021, of March 24, on the regulation of euthanasia (BOE. March 25, 2021) approved in Spain, from a constitutional perspective, highlighting its main aspects. The matter under study is not exempt from controversy because it covers legal, medical and ethical considerations of great complexity.
Contra la patologización intensiva en términos de derechos humanos: Activismo gordo en Argentina
2020
This work addresses the way in which Argentine Fat Activism has developed, in recent years, the demand for depathologization of fatness, taking elements from critical discourses on the health of fat people to frame them in a perspective typical of the Human Rights. First, the contemporary fat body is described in terms of stigma and discrimination, especially in the health field. Then, they refer to a series of critical positions on the pathologization and medicalization of fatness from the biomedical perspective, Fat Studies and Fat Activism. Lastly, a series of interventions that the Argentine activist collective Taller Hacer la Vista Gorda produced between 2017 and 2020 were considered, …
