Planar Bragg Grating Sensor for the Detection of CFC-11

We demonstrate the fabrication of a highly sensitive opto-chemical sensor system based on cyclodextrin derivative functionalized planar Bragg gratings for an online in-situ detection and measurement of the environmentally harmful propellant trichlorofluoromethane in real-time.

Quantifying Mean Shape and Variability of Footprints Using Mean Sets

This paper1 presents an application of several definitions of a mean set for use in footwear design. For a given size, footprint pressure images corresponding to different individuals constitute our raw data. Appropriate footwear design needs to have knowledge of some kind of typical footprint. Abstract Organic and other volatile metal(loid) species (e.g. hydrides) in environmental gases can be determined with high sensitivity and selectivity by low-temperature gas chromatography coupled on-line to plasma mass spectrometry (LTGC/ICP–MS). A standard reference solution is analysed simultaneously for calibration of the results as well as for monitoring the excitation conditions in the plasma. This highly sensitive analytical method was applied in field screening tests at Cu and Hg deposits in Germany. Determination of 14-3-3 protein levels in cerebrospinal fluid from Creutzfeldt-Jakob patients by a highly sensitive capture assay.

The level of 14-3-3gamma protein was determined in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and non-CJD patients applying a new and fast microplate assay (14-3-3 protein capture assay), based on the binding to a peptide comprising a phosphorylated recognition motif of 14-3-3 protein. The levels of the gamma-isoform of 14-3-3 protein in CSF samples from CJD patients (n=41) were significantly higher than those observed in patients with non-CJD dementias (n=36) suggesting that this capture assay is a reliable method in the diagnosis of CJD. Abstract Gas Chromatography-Olfactometry (GC-O) is a technique that lies halfway between physicochemical and sensory analysis and involves the perception of volatile flavour compounds, separated by gas chromatography, by the human nose. Calving margins are highly sensitive to changes in climate and glacier terminus geometry. Numerical modelling suggests that calving glacier termini are self-organized critical systems that are fluctuating between states of advance and retreat.
