Old proteins - new locations: myoglobin, haemoglobin, neuroglobin and cytoglobin in solid tumours and cancer cells
2010
Aim: The unexpected identification of myoglobin (MB) in breast cancer prompted us to evaluate the clinico-pathological value of MB, haemoglobin (HB) and cytoglobin (CYGB) in human breast carcinoma cases. We further screened for the presence of neuroglobin (NGB) and CYGB in tumours of diverse origin, and assessed the O2-response of HB, MB and CYGB mRNAs in cancer cell lines, to better elicit the links between this ectopic globin expression and tumour hypoxia. Methods: Breast tumours were analysed by immunohistochemistry for HB, MB and CYGB and correlated with clinico-pathological parameters. Screening for CYGB and NGB mRNA expression in tumour entities was performed by hybridization, quant…
Spheroid body myopathy revisited
1997
Having reported spheroid body myopathy from Indiana (IN) inherited in an autosomal-dominant fashion several years ago, we now describe additional findings from the Oregon branch—briefly recorded earlier—and confirm earlier studies in another clinically affected IN member of this kinship demonstrating identical spheroid bodies within the myopathic muscle specimens. The spheroid bodies also contained increased amounts of desmin, α-B crystallin, and ubiquitin within muscle fibers. Our studies now have established that spheroid body myopathy is a member of the growing family of desminopathic neuromuscular conditions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Muscle Nerve20:1127–1136, 1997
Immunohistological analysis of sarcoid myopathy.
1995
In six cases of granulomatous myopathy immunohistological analysis showed a typical pattern with macrophages and T4 cells diffusely distributed throughout the cellular exudate. T8 lymphocytes were interspersed irregularly within the granulomatous cellular infiltrate early in granuloma maturation and in later stages predominantly confined to a lymphocytic mantle surrounding the granulomas. The cellular infiltrate displayed numerous activated HLA-DR and interleukin-2 receptor positive cells including cell proliferation. Increased connective tissue showed strong immunoreactivity for fibronectin and hyaluronate. Muscle fibres were negative for MHC class I molecules. Atrophic muscle fibres expre…
An immunohistochemical and biochemical study of cytokeratin polypeptides in a non-Paget type adenocarcinoma of the vulva
1988
SummaryThe intermediate filament composition was studied in a malignant neoplasm of the vulva in a 42 year old patient. The absence of vimentin excluded the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. Anaplastic squamous cell carcinoma could be excluded by the presence of glandular type cytokeratins numbers 7, 8, 18, 19 in the neoplastic cells. Intermediate filament typing did not support a diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma. Since the typical epidermal involvement by tumour cells was lacking, Paget's disease was excluded. Metastatic adenocarcinoma was excluded by the lack of relevant clinical findings. It was concluded that the lesion represented an adenocarcinoma of the vulva of the non-Paget type mos…
Rectal cancer: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI correlates with lymph node status and epidermal growth factor receptor expression
2013
Purpose To evaluate correlations between dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) and clinicopathologic data as well as immunostaining of the markers of angiogenesis epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and CXC-motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) in patients with rectal cancer. Materials and Methods Presurgical DCE-MRI was performed in 41 patients according to a standardized protocol. Two quantitative parameters (k21, A) were derived from a pharmacokinetic two-compartment model, and one semiquantitative parameter (TTP) was assessed. Standardized surgery and histopathologic examinations were performed in all patients. Immunostaining for EGFR and CXCR4 was performed an…
Role of MUC1 in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
2016
Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive and irreversible form of fibrotic intersticial lung disease, characterized by uncontrolled fibroblast proliferative processes and alveolar type II epithelial dysfunction. MUC1 is considered as oncogenic molecule by altering signaling pathways involved in cellular proliferation and cell death. Objective: To analyze the implication of MUC1 in IPF Methods: Lung tissue from 14 healthy and 14 IPF patients was obtained. The expression of MUC1 cytoplasmic tail (CT) and its phosphorylation forms in T-1224 and Y-1229 residues were analyzed by western blot and immunohistochemistry. The effect of MUC1 on TGFβ1-Iinduced epithelia…
Synovial cysts of the temporomandibular joint: an immunohistochemical characterization and literature review.
2013
Synovial cysts of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are very rare, and to date, only 12 cases of a synovial cyst in the TMJ region have been reported in the literature. In this paper, we present the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of one such lesion affecting a 48-year-old woman, presented with a mass in the left preauricular region. We describe the usefulness of immunohistochemical analysis for recognizing the synovial lining, which allowed for clear differentiation between ganglion and synovial cysts. Immunohistochemical analyses can be used to diagnose synovial cysts with certainty; however, using at least two markers is advisable to distinguish the two existi…

Novel Monoclonal Antibody 138H11 Against Human γ-Glutamyl-Transferase: Classification, Histogenesis and Immunoscintigraphy of Renal Tumors
1992
Monoclonal antibody (mAb) 138H11 was produced against human gamma-glutamyl transferase as a molecular probe for renal cancer. Immunohistochemical analyses of mAb 138H11 revealed its reaction with the brush border of normal kidney cortex as well as with clear cell and chromophilic renal carcinomas. In contrast, renal oncocytomas, chromophobic carcinomas, and Duct-Bellini carcinomas were negative for this antibody. These results support a new approach for the histogenesis and classification of renal tumors. Immunoscintigraphy of tumor bearing human kidneys, perfused with 99Tcm-labeled mAb 138H11 after nephrectomy, showed enrichment of 138H11 in three of three clear cell carcinomas that was up…
