In-vitro regulation of odontogenic gene expression in human embryonic tooth cells and SHED cells

2012

The bud-to-cap stage transition during early tooth development is a time when the tooth-inducing potential becomes restricted to the mesenchyme. Several key genes, expressed in the mesenchyme at this stage, are an absolute requirement for the progression of tooth development. These include the transcription factors Msx1 and Pax9. The inductive potential of tooth mesenchyme cells is a key requisite for whole-tooth bioengineering and thus identification of cells that can retain this property following expansion in culture is an important as yet unresolved, goal. We show here that in-vitro culture of embryonic human tooth mesenchyme cells and SHED cells express low levels of PAX9 and MSX1 and …

Ultrastructure of differentiating hemocytes in the embryo of Oncopeltus fasciatus dallas (insecta, heteroptera).

1978

The hemocytes of Oncopeltus differentiate rather early during embryogenesis. They are segregated by the mesoderm soon after its formation (about 50h after egg deposition). Newly segregated hemocytes show the “typical” features of “embryonic” cells: many free ribosomes, a few strands of rough ER, the cisternae of which are considerably distended, electron lucent vacuoles around the periphery, and glycogen deposits. A few hours thereafter the hemocytes undergo striking subcellular changes. First, glycogen, electron lucent vacuoles and rough ER disappear and phagocytotic activity can be observed. Golgi complexes become well expressed and give rise to electron dense vesicles which fuse to large…

Immunocytochemical typification of mesothelial cells in effusions: in vivo and in vitro models.

1994

We have performed immunocytochemical, immunoelectron microscopy, Western blot, and culture techniques using monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin, vimentin, and desmin on 17 benign and 20 malignant effusions of pleural and ascitic origin. Triple coexpression of these three antigens was observed in benign reactive mesothelial cells as well as in one case of mesothelioma. All metastatic adenocarcinoma cells were consistently negative to desmin and positive to cytokeratin and vimentin. Present results were helpful to distinguish reactive and malignant mesothelioma from metastatic carcinoma cells in effusions.

Cranial bone histology of

2016

In this study, 21 skull bones of Metoposaurus krasiejowensis from the Late Triassic of Poland were investigated histologically. Dermal bones show a diploë structure, with an ornamented external surface. The ridges consist of mostly well vascularized parallel-fibered bone; the valleys are built of an avascular layer of lamellar bone. The thick middle region consists of cancellous bone, with varying porosity. The thin and less vascularized internal cortex consists of parallel-fibered bone. The numerous Sharpey’s fibers and ISF are present in all bones. The cyclicity of growth is manifested as an alternation of thick, avascular annuli and high vascularized zones as well as a sequence of restin…

Identification of microplastics using 4‐dimethylamino‐4′‐nitrostilbene solvatochromic fluorescence

2021

In this work, we introduce the use of 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene (DANS) fluorescent dye for applications in the detection and analysis of microplastics, an impendent source of pollution made of synthetic organic polymers with a size varying from less than 5 mm to nanometer scale. The use of this dye revealed itself as a versatile, fast and sensitive tool for readily discriminate microplastics in water environment. The experimental evidences herein presented demonstrate that DANS efficiently absorbs into a variety of polymers constituting microplastics, and its solvatochromic properties lead to a positive shift of the fluorescence emission spectrum according to the polarity of the poly…

Immunohistochemical/histochemical double staining method in the study of the columnar metaplasia of the oesophagus

2014

Intestinal metaplasia in Barrett’s oesophagus (BO) represents an important risk factor for oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Instead, few and controversial data are reported about the progression risk of columnar-lined oesophagus without intestinal metaplasia (CLO), posing an issue about its clinical management. The aim was to evaluate if some immunophenotypic changes were present in CLO independently of the presence of the goblet cells. We studied a series of oesophageal biopsies from patients with endoscopic finding of columnar metaplasia, by performing some immunohistochemical stainings (CK7, p53, AuroraA) combined with histochemistry (Alcian-blue and Alcian/PAS), with the aim of simultaneousl…

Response of periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate and Biodentine: a pilot histological study on humans.

2018

Background The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time the histological response of human periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine. Methods Six patients scheduled for implant full-arch rehabilitation were randomly assigned to one of the two test groups: MTA or Biodentine treatment. For each patient, two teeth scheduled for strategic extraction were randomly assigned either to the test or to the control treatment. A lateral perforation was drilled on the root and either repaired with MTA/Biodentine or filled with gutta-percha(control). Three months later, the teeth were extracted along with the coronal third of the alveolar bone and a portion of gingiva…
