Fugitives in transit. The Spanish Republican exile through Portugal (1936-1950)
2017
Despite scant attention from historiography, Portugal played an important role as a way station on the road to exile for many Republicans during and after the Spanish Civil War. The situation in the neighbouring country was not easy for these people, as Antonio Oliveira de Salazar’s regime —officially allied with Franco’s Spain— did not recognize them as political refugees, but as illegal immigrants to be returned to Spain, which would have catastrophic consequences for many of them. Through the analysis of abundant primary sources in archives from Spain, Portugal, Mexico and the United States, we seek to understand the details of this Portuguese stage of the exile. We discover how, despite…
‘A Hellish Nightmare’: The Swedish Press and the Construction of Early Holocaust Narratives, 1945–1950
2020
This study examines how the Swedish press responded to and portrayed the Holocaust immediately after the war. The liberation of the camps, the role and guilt of ordinary Germans, the Nuremberg trials and the ongoing problem of Jewish DPs in Europe were the most important issues on the basis of which the Swedish press had shaped the early post-war view of the Holocaust. Moreover, the fate of the Jews under Nazi Germany formed an important element of such reporting. The author argues that, contrary to the dominant Anglo-American historiography, which holds that the first post-war decades were marked by silence surrounding the German genocide, the Swedish press wrote about the Holocaust often …
Elites and Ecclesiastical Careers in Early Modern Sicily : Bishops, Abbots and Knights
2014
The most recent historiography has confirmed the importance of ecclesiastical careers within the ranks of the Catholic Church (bishops and cardinals) as well as religious orders (abbots and priors) and military orders (primarily the Order of Malta) for early modern family strategies. They were one of the main paths followed by cadet members of the nobility to build, strengthen and even enable the survival of the social prestige and political influence of their families. The role of the clergy was in fact crucial in performing a valuable function of mediation, especially with regard to political power in order to achieve increasingly prestigious awards (titles, offices, prebends). The aim of…
Confessionalization and social discipline: two paradigms for the modern history
2019
2019
This essay aims to give a critical account of the main arguments involved in the debate about the so called «linguistic turn» in History. Bringing into discussion the most recent historiographical production, we argue that there is space for, and an unrgent need of, thinking seriously about the relationship between 'language' an 'history' without, necessarily, collapsing our discipline into a mere narrative or a postmodern technique of «reading the signs». We want to challenge, therefore, rhe rigid dichotomy between a perception of language as a reflection of social reality and a perception of language as the ultimate creator of it.
“This Racial Menace”?: Public Health, Venereal Disease and Maori in New Zealand, 1930–1947
2007
In 1939, Whakatane, on the remote east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, came to the attention of the New Zealand Department of Health as an area where syphilis was “suspected [to be] widespread”.1 This isolated part of the country was largely inhabited by Maori communities, and the revelation that venereal disease (VD) was so prevalent caught the Department by surprise, especially as a nationwide public health campaign against venereal disease had been in progress since 1917.2 In response, a comprehensive venereal disease campaign targeting Maori alone was developed––the earliest example of such a focus by the Department. This reaction highlighted what Dr Thomas Ritchie, Director o…
La historia maleable. A propósito de Internet
2006
This essay attempts to assess the impact of the new technologies on the discipline of history. It starts from the assumption that the revolution in information technology has altered the way in which texts are transmitted, the medium in which they are made available, and the ways in which they are read. Moving on, this essay tries to evaluate how far it might affect other fundamental ideas. The changes are various. On the one hand, it could have an effect on the type of source, and to a degree on the critical method with which historians approach whatever type of document. On the other hand, it could also undermine the notion of authorship, not only because many of the new texts in existenc…
