Inkonsekvent og omskiftelig?

2021

Artikkelen undersøker hvordan historikeren P.A. Denne «skandinavistisk…

Losing Monarchs: The Legacy of German and English National Historiography

2017

During the nineteenth century, Leopold von Ranke, Johann Gustav Droysen, Alfred von Arneth, and other German-speaking historians established an alleged ‘scientific’ approach to history, based on the so-called historiographic method. They interpreted history as determined by ‘great’ ideas, such as nation, state, and religion. Similarly, the British Whig interpretation of history—represented, for example, by Henry Hallam and Thomas Macaulay—conceptualized history as a continuously ascending process, in which Great Britain established a civilised modern empire spanning territories on all continents. This chapter shows how monarchs became lost—that is, not considered noteworthy—when their rule …

Naturalism, Historism, and Phenomenology

2010

According to a generally accepted thesis, science and metaphysics are separate intellectual activities. The thesis is new and not generally accepted in the philosophical systems of Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the first centuries in the development of the modern philosophy. The thesis presupposes the existence of sciences and their methodologies. Natural sciences in the modern sense exist since the sixteenth century, human sciences since the first half of the nineteenth century, and formal sciences since the end of the nineteenth century. Only the relation between the natural and the human sciences as empirical sciences are of interest for this investigation. Systematic reflect…

La ricerca impossibile dello storicismo. Fulvio Tessitore interprete di Croce

2017

The essay start exposing the main thesis of Tessitore’s book Benedetto Croce. La ricerca dello storicismo: Tessitore argues that Croce could not set a coherent historical thinking up, because of the tension between his formative Humboldtian kantism and the late yet critical adhesion to the Hegelian philosophy. Then, it tries to explain why Croce’s absolute historism and Tessitore’s critical historism – have similar motives but become very different as to their results.

Valori perduti e perduta libertà. Croce e il dibattito tedesco sulla relatività dei valori

2017

The relativism of values (Werterelativismus) is a problem very central for the historicism debate, which concerned historians and phi- losophers at the beginning of the twentieth century. The historization of all knowledge and all values leads to their historical devaluation. How can values still be formulated and maintained in face of this relativization? This was the question of theorists such as Otto Hintze, Friedrich Meinecke, Max Weber and Ernst Troeltsch, as well as of the philosopher Benedetto Croce in times of emerging Fascism, that was regarded as a political and moral threat. As representatives of an intellectual and social liberalism, these academics developed their own strategie…
