Blow-up collocation solutions of nonlinear homogeneous Volterra integral equations

In this paper, collocation methods are used for detecting blow-up solutions of nonlinear homogeneous Volterra-Hammerstein integral equations. To do this, we introduce the concept of "blow-up collocation solution" and analyze numerically some blow-up time estimates using collocation methods in particular examples where previous results about existence and uniqueness can be applied. Finally, we discuss the relationships between necessary conditions for blow-up of collocation solutions and exact solutions.
Boolean Functions of Low Polynomial Degree for Quantum Query Complexity Theory

The degree of a polynomial representing (or approximating) a function f is a lower bound for the quantum query complexity of f. This observation has been a source of many lower bounds on quantum algorithms. It has been an open problem whether this lower bound is tight. This is why Boolean functions are needed with a high number of essential variables and a low polynomial degree. Unfortunately, it is a well-known problem to construct such functions. I. M. Isaacs has conjectured (see \cite{isa00}) that if the product of two faithful irreducible characters of a solvable group is irreducible, then the group is cyclic. In this paper we prove a special case of the following conjecture, which generalizes Isaacs conjecture. Suppose that $G$ is solvable and that $\psi,\phi\in\Irr(G)$ are faithful. If $\psi \phi=m\chi$ where $m$ is a positive integer and $\chi \in \Irr(G)$ then $\psi$ and $\phi$ vanish on $G- Z(G)$. In particular we prove that the above conjecture holds for $p$-groups.
A Criterion for Attaining the Welch Bounds with Applications for Mutually Unbiased Bases

The paper gives a short introduction to mutually unbiased bases and the Welch bounds and demonstrates that the latter is a good technical tool to explore the former. In particular, a criterion for a system of vectors to satisfy the Welch bounds with equality is given and applied for the case of MUBs. This yields a necessary and sufficient condition on a set of orthonormal bases to form a complete system of MUBs. This condition takes an especially elegant form in the case of homogeneous systems of MUBs. We express some known constructions of MUBs in this form. Upward and Downward Limit Pricing: The Role of Post-Entry Competition

Under asymmetric information, entry-deterring strategies by an incumbent monopolist can consist of deviations from its static monopoly price through downward deviations termed downward limit pricing, or upward deviations termed upward limit pricing. Our analysis shows that the mode of post-entry competition influences the range of situations in which an incumbent adopts a strategy of downward limit pricing instead of an upward one: this range is greater under price than under output competition; it is decreasing in the degree of product differentiation; and with homogeneous product only downward limit pricing emerges under price competition, while upward limit pricing can still take place w…

We discuss a new approach to three-dimensional electrical impedance imaging based on a reduction of the information to be demanded from a reconstruction algorithm. Images are obtained from a single measurement by suitably simplifying the geometry of the measuring chamber and by restricting the nature of the object to be imaged and the information required from the image.
