Intersectionalities, dis/abilities and subjectification in deaf LGBT people: An exploratory study in Sicily

2016

The article discusses the multiple discrimination, normalization and stigmatization experienced by deaf LGBT youth in Sicily, Italy, on the basis of a study of their everyday life (specifically school years and peer interactions). So far in Italy, very little attention has been paid to multiple discrimination and, specifically, to homophobic violence towards disabled individuals. It is, therefore, impossible to consider any valid sampling of the desired population and very few reports have been produced. The authors, a sociologist and a psychologist, carry out an analysis of the results obtained from interviews with 15 LGBT individuals recruited through social networks, thematic chats, and …

Instruments measuring omophobia: A systematic review

2020

The aim of this systematic review is to provide a general overview of the available measures to assess homophobia and internalized homophobia, and to explain their structural features and their psychometric properties. Nearly all of the reviewed scales achieved satisfactory reliability and construct validity. This review represents a useful tool to support researchers in choosing the most appropriate scale for their research purposes. Furthermore, this work could inspire the creation of new instruments or the validation of existing measures in the Italian socio-cultural context.

OVERTURE Love Love is a Pink Cake or Queering Chopin in Times of Homophobia

2021

An introduction to the three essays included in this section. The article highlights the right to know whether Chopin was gay and contextualizes this inquiry in a very long and pervasive historiographical tradition, essentially twohundred years long, dedicated to examine Chopin sexual orientation, on the one hand, and on the other the more recent tradition of queering western classical music composers. The main point is not to demonstrate categorically that Chopin was ?gay? (a relative, modern identity marker in any case) but rather to highlight the discourses that have presented him as unequivocally heterosexual.

Gay athlete's experiences in sport and exercise domains in Finland

2013

Sport is perceived to be one of the last fortresses of heteronormative and homonegative attitudes that cause psychological and social issues for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) athletes, especially in their self-confidence and self-concept. Furthermore, these negative mindsets challenge LGBT individuals' participation in organized sport and physical activity. To offer effective consulting services, it is vital for sport psychologists to be aware of the issues that LGBT athletes might struggle with throughout their sport careers. Adopting 'queer theory' as a theoretical framework, this study strives to understand a gay male athlete's experiences in sport and physical activity …

Sociopolitical and Cultural Correlates of Internalized Homonegativity in Gay and Bisexual Men: Findings from a Global Study

2016

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in International Journal of Sexual Health on 15 November 2016, available online: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/19317611.2016.1247125. Results: Variables at the (European) country-level that were associated with higher levels of IH included lack of laws recognizing same-sex relationships and perceiv…

Identità e omofobia in Cosa Nostra: un contributo gruppoanalitico soggettuale

2012

Homophobic Conduct as Normative Masculinity Test

2020

Homophobic violence can be considered as an expressive act. Violent behavior can be considered as anti-homosexual when victims are chosen because they are considered or perceived as homosexual. Following this reasoning, hate crimes as homophobic crimes have a communicative value, since they represent a range of “masculinization” practices within the processes of gender socialization, both in conventional and illegitimate social worlds. Every homophobic act aims to intimidate not just the victim, but the whole group associated with the, whether concretely or merely in the perception of the perpetrator. This chapter will take into account the main research on victimization from an internation…
