Legionella pneumophila pangenome reveals strain-specific virulence factors

2010

Abstract Background Legionella pneumophila subsp. pneumophila is a gram-negative γ-Proteobacterium and the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, a form of epidemic pneumonia. It has a water-related life cycle. In industrialized cities L. pneumophila is commonly encountered in refrigeration towers and water pipes. Infection is always via infected aerosols to humans. Although many efforts have been made to eradicate Legionella from buildings, it still contaminates the water systems. The town of Alcoy (Valencian Region, Spain) has had recurrent outbreaks since 1999. The strain "Alcoy 2300/99" is a particularly persistent and recurrent strain that was isolated during one of the most signifi…

Investigating effects in GNSS station coordinate time series

2014

The vertical and horizontal displacements of the Earth can be measured to a high degree of precision using GNSS. Time series of Latvian GNSS station positions of both the EUPOS®-Riga and LatPos networks have been developed at the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation of the University of Latvia (LU GGI). In this study the main focus is made on the noise analysis of the obtained time series and site displacement identification. The results of time series have been analysed and distinctive behaviour of EUPOS®-Riga and LatPos station coordinate changes have been identified. The possible dependences of GNSS station coordinate distribution on EPN station problems, seismic activity of some area…

Domestic Agencies in an Emergent European Executive Order

2011

Abstract This article poses the following question: who is in control of domestic agencies when they are handling domestic ‘EU affairs’ broadly speaking? The article demonstrates that domestic agencies are primarily steered by their parent ministry, being largely ‘single‐hatted’. This observation does not render ‘double‐hatted’ agencies implausible — as for example when domestic agencies practise EU legislation — generating a compound European executive order. The empirical analysis benefits from a large‐N elite survey among 1452 domestic agency officials. This article contests claims that the ‘agencification’ of domestic government systems as well as their involvement in an emergent Europe…

The supernova remnant SN 1006 as a Galactic particle accelerator

2022

The origin of cosmic rays is a pivotal open issue of high-energy astrophysics. Supernova remnants are strong candidates to be the Galactic factory of cosmic rays, their blast waves being powerful particle accelerators. However, supernova remnants can power the observed flux of cosmic rays only if they transfer a significant fraction of their kinetic energy to the accelerated particles, but conclusive evidence for such efficient acceleration is still lacking. In this scenario, the shock energy channeled to cosmic rays should induce a higher post-shock density than that predicted by standard shock conditions. Here we show this effect, and probe its dependence on the orientation of the ambient…

Millimeter-VLBI observations of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei with source-frequency phase-referencing

2021

We report millimeter-VLBI results of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (M 84 and M 87) up to 88 GHz with source-frequency phase-referencing observations. We detected the weak VLBI core and obtained the first image of M 84 at 88 GHz. The derived brightness temperature of M 84 core was about 7.2$\times$10$^9$ K, which could serve as a lower limit as the core down to 30 Schwarzschild radii was still un-resolved in our 88 GHz observations. We successfully determined the core-shifts of M 87 at 22-44 GHz and 44-88 GHz through source-frequency phase-referencing technique. The jet apex of M 87 could be deduced at about 46 $\mu$as upstream of the 43 GHz core from core-shift measurements. The est…

Radio observations of active galactic nuclei with mm-VLBI

2017

Over the past few decades, our knowledge of jets produced by active galactic nuclei (AGN) has greatly progressed thanks to the development of very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI). Nevertheless, the crucial mechanisms involved in the formation of the plasma flow, as well as those driving its exceptional radiative output up to TeV energies, remain to be clarified. Most likely, these physical processes take place at short separations from the supermassive black hole, on scales which are inaccessible to VLBI observations at centimeter wavelengths. Due to their high synchrotron opacity, the dense and highly magnetized regions in the vicinity of the central engine can only be penetrated when …

Spontaneous Scalarization of Charged Black Holes

2018

Extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet (eSTGB) gravity has been recently argued to exhibit spontaneous scalarisation of vacuum black holes (BHs). A similar phenomenon can be expected in a larger class of models, which includes e.g. Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) models, where spontaneous scalarisation of electrovacuum BHs should occur. EMS models have no higher curvature corrections, a technical simplification over eSTGB models that allows us to investigate, fully non-linearly, BH scalarisation in two novel directions. Firstly, numerical simulations in spherical symmetry show, dynamically, that Reissner-Nordstr\"om (RN) BHs evolve into a perturbatively stable scalarised BH. Secondly, we compute…
