Trapping Horizons as inner boundary conditions for black hole spacetimes

We present a set of inner boundary conditions for the numerical construction of dynamical black hole space-times, when employing a 3+1 constrained evolution scheme and an excision technique. These inner boundary conditions are heuristically motivated by the dynamical trapping horizon framework and are enforced in an elliptic subsystem of the full Einstein equation. In the stationary limit they reduce to existing isolated horizon boundary conditions. A characteristic analysis completes the discussion of inner boundary conditions for the radiative modes.

Spacetime Foam Model of the Schwarzschild Horizon

We consider a spacetime foam model of the Schwarzschild horizon, where the horizon consists of Planck size black holes. According to our model the entropy of the Schwarzschild black hole is proportional to the area of its event horizon. It is possible to express geometrical arguments to the effect that the constant of proportionality is, in natural units, equal to one quarter.

Detection of the high z GRB 080913 and its implications on progenitors and energy extraction mechanisms*

We present multiwavelength observations of one of the most distant gamma-ray bursts detected so far, GRB080913. Based on these observations, we consider whether it could be classified as a short-duration GRB and discuss the implications for the progenitor nature and energy extraction mechanisms. Methods. Multiwavelength X-ray, near IR and millimetre observations were made between 20.7 h and ∼16.8 days after the event. Results. Whereas a very faint afterglow was seen at the 3.5m CAHA telescope in the nIR, the X-ray afterglow was clearly detected in both Swift and XMM-Newton observations. Study of Two BeppoSAX Observations of GX 340+0

2006

We present the results of two BeppoSAX broad band (0.1–200 keV) observations of the Z-source GX 340+0 comparing our results to those of a previous observation of the source. From the color–color diagram we selected three zones and extracted the source energy spectrum from each zone. We find that the model, composed by a blackbody plus a Comptonized component, absorbed by an equivalent hydrogen column of ~6 × 10 22 cm −2 , well fits the spectra in the energy range below 30 keV. At higher energies a power law component with photon index of 2.5 is observed. The associated flux decreases going from the horizontal branch to the flaring branch of the Z-track.

Self-Enrichment in Globular Clusters: Is There a Role for the Super-Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars?

In four globular clusters (GCs) a non negligible fraction of stars can be interpreted only as a very helium rich population. The evidence comes from the presence of a "blue" main sequence in $\omega$ Cen and NGC 2808, and from the the very peculiar horizontal branch morphology in NGC 6441 and NGC 6388. Although a general consensus is emerging on the fact that self--enrichment is a common feature among GCs, the helium content required for these stars is Y$\simgt$0.35, and it is difficult to understand how it can be produced without any --or, for $\omega$ Cen, without a considerable--associated metal enhancement. Real-time Sub-pixel Cross Bar Position Metrology

Many measurement application fields need to calculate cross bar intersection locations of horizontal and vertical bars. The system we developed and that we present in this paper is an embedded system that measures cross bar positions with sub-pixel accuracy on 1024×1024 pixel images delivered by a camera at a 50 MHz data rate in real time. This is done using an algorithm that looks for intersection areas and then locally calculates two lines representing horizontal and vertical bars. An infinite-horizon model of dynamic membership of international environmental agreements

Abstract Much of the literature on international environmental agreements (IEAs) uses static models, although most important transboundary pollution problems involve stock pollutants. The few papers that study IEAs using models of stock pollutants do not allow for the possibility that membership of the IEA may change endogenously over time. This study describes the impact of airborne pollution resulting from mining and smelting activities on the soils of the Almalyk mining and industrial area (NE Uzbekistan). Samples were collected along a transect downwind of the industrial area. Enriched contents of some metals were found in the upper soil layers near the metallurgical complex (Zn≤3010 mg kg(-1), Pb≤630 mg kg(-1), Cd≤30 mg kg(-1)) which suggests that these metals were derived from local stack emissions. The morphology and internal microstructure of metal-bearing spherical particles found in the heavy mineral fraction suggest that these particles were probably a result of inefficient flue gas cleaning technique of the smelter…
