Networking strategy as a strategic management tool

2011

Many research studies in operations and strategic management have investigated how different kinds of decisions regarding business relationships can positively affect firm’s operations performance, resources endowment, and competitive position. Very few studies exist trying to illuminate the actual behavior of managers when making strategic decisions concerning their company relationships with other companies as opposed to normative theory. By collecting data from 13 business agreements from 3 firms, the purpose of this paper is explore linkages between the “set” of strategic objectives that managers are willing to pursue and the “set” of networking decisions that they actually consider whe…

UV Index experimental values on vertical surfaces

2011

UV erythemal irradiance (UVER) has been studied on a horizontal plane and on vertical surfaces with different orientations in Valencia, Spain. The evolution of the solar noon value and the maximum daily value over a year has been analysed from the instantaneous UVER taken every five minutes on the horizontal plane and on vertical surfaces with north, south, east and west orientations. The annual evolution of these values shows a sinusoidal form for all planes except for the vertical south plane with maxima in spring and autumn. The UV Index (UVI) on these planes was also determined. The percentage of coincidence of the UVI at solar noon and of the maximum daily UVER values, considering diff…

Improving graphical information system model use with elision and connecting lines

2004

Graphical information system (IS) models are used to specify and design IS from several perspectives. Due to the growing size and complexity of modern information systems, critical design information is often distributed via multiple diagrams. This slows search performance and results in reading errors that later cause omissions and inconsistencies in the final designs. We study the impact of large screens and the two promising visual integration techniques of elision and connecting lines that can decrease the designers' cognitive efforts to read diagrams. We conduct a laboratory experiment using 84 computer science students to investigate the impact of these techniques on the accuracy of t…

Competition and horizontal integration in maritime freight transport

2010

This paper develops a theoretical model for freight transport characterized by competition between means of transport (the road and maritime sectors), where modes are perceived as differentiated products. Competitive behavior is assumed in the road freight sector, and there are constant returns to scale. In contrast, the freight maritime sector is characterized by oligopolistic behavior, where shipping lines enjoy economies of scale. The market equilibrium where the shipping lines behave as profit maximizers, provides a first approximation to the determinants of market shares, profits, and user welfare. We then characterize the equilibrium when horizontal integration of shipping lines occur…

ViR: a tool to account for intrasample variability in the detection of viral integrations

2020

ABSTRACTLateral gene transfer (LT) from viruses to eukaryotic cells is a well-recognized phenomenon. Somatic integrations of viruses have been linked to persistent viral infection and genotoxic effects, including various types of cancer. As a consequence, several bioinformatic tools have been developed to identify viral sequences integrated into the human genome. Viral sequences that integrate into germline cells can be transmitted vertically, be maintained in host genomes and be co-opted for host functions. Endogenous viral elements (EVEs) have long been known, but the extent of their widespread occurrence has only been recently appreciated. Modern genomic sequencing analyses showed that e…

Bracovirus derived genes in the genome of Spodoptera exigua Hubner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and their role in host susceptibility to pathogens

2015

A histological study of a femur of Plagiosuchus, a Middle Triassic temnospondyl amphibian from southern GEmany, using thin sections and micro-CT scan…

2013

AbstractThe histology of a femur of Plagiosuchus, a Middle Triassic temnospondyl amphibian, is described on the basis of two supplementary methods: classic thin sectioning and micro-CT scanning. In addition, the effectiveness of high-resolution micro-CT scanning for histological analysis is assessed. A classic, mid-shaft thin section of the femur was prepared, but prior to slicing two micro-CT scans were made. One of these has an image stack of a total of 1,024 images in the horizontal plane and a slice thickness of 87.8 μm, so that the entire bone could be captured, while the second was at mid-shaft region only, yet with a higher resolution of 28.3 μm and an image stack of 787 images in th…

Real-time RT-PCR detection of betanodavirus in naturally and experimentally infected fish from Spain

2011

Infections with betanodavirus affect a wide range of wild and farmed fish species throughout the world, mostly from the marine environment. The aim of this work was to develop and validate real-time RT-PCR assays for sensitive and specific detection of nodavirus in diseased or carrier fish. The new detection assay was used to study the transmission and development of nodavirus infection in juvenile sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.), challenged by different routes, and also to screen for nodavirus in various farmed fish species. On average, the sensitivity was 10-100 times higher than a standard RT-PCR, and the assay was able to detect asymptomatic carrier fish that otherwise could have be…
