Test of Time Dilation Using StoredLi+Ions as Clocks at Relativistic Speed

We present the concluding result from an Ives-Stilwell-type time dilation experiment using 7Li+ ions confined at a velocity of β=v/c=0.338 in the storage ring ESR at Darmstadt. A Λ-type three-level system within the hyperfine structure of the 7Li+3S1 →3P2 line is driven by two laser beams aligned parallel and antiparallel relative to the ion beam. The lasers' Doppler shifted frequencies required for resonance are measured with an accuracy of <4×10(-9) using optical-optical double resonance spectroscopy. This allows us to verify the special relativity relation between the time dilation factor γ and the velocity β, γ√1-β2=1 to within ±2.3×10(-9) at this velocity. The result, which is singled …
Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality test in an optomechanical device

We propose here a scheme, based on the measurement of quadrature phase coherence, aimed at testing the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality in an optomechanical setting. Our setup is constituted by two optical cavities dispersively coupled to a common mechanical resonator. We show that it is possible to generate EPR-like correlations between the quadratures of the output fields of the two cavities, and, depending on the system parameters, to observe the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality.

Abstract Size fractions and single grains of zircon, hornblende and biotite have been dated to define the formation age and thermal history of the northern Haya Terrane (NHT), a late Proterozoic island arc terrane of the Red Sea Hills (RSH), northeast Sudan. U Pb and 207 Pb/ 206 Pb zircon data for acidic volcanics and granitoid rocks bracket the time of formation of the NHT between 887 ± 20 and 854 ± 9 Ma. 40 Ar/ 39 Ar hornblende and biotite ages of a gabbro near Suakin suggest passage through the argon closing temperature for hornblende at about 841 ± 4 Ma and 782 ± 6 Ma for biotite. GHZ state generation of three Josephson qubits in the presence of bosonic baths

We analyze an entangling protocol to generate tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a system consisting of three superconducting qubits with pairwise coupling. The dynamics of the open quantum system is investigated by taking into account the interaction of each qubit with an independent bosonic bath with an ohmic spectral structure. To this end a microscopic master equation is constructed and exactly solved. We find that the protocol here discussed is stable against decoherence and dissipation due to the presence of the external baths.
Horn growth rate and longevity: implications for natural and artificial selection in thinhorn sheep (Ovis dalli).

We used horn measurements from natural and hunted mortalities of male thinhorn sheep Ovis dalli from Yukon Territory, Canada, to examine the relationship between rapid growth early in life and longevity. We found that rapid growth was associated with reduced longevity for sheep aged 5 years and older for both the hunted and natural mortality data sets. The negative relationship between growth rate and longevity in hunted sheep can at least partially be explained by morphologically biased hunting regulations. Priostonchus sp. n. (Rhabditida: Diplogastridae) is described from a population of Citrus Longhorn Beetles. Alive adults of this Cerambycid were collected from Acer saccharinum trees at Assago and Parabiago (Villastanza), two localities near Milan (Italy). The natural occurrence of the entomogenous nematode in the beetle was not frequent and widespread in the study area. Preliminary laboratory infectivity tests highlight the potential parasitic nature of the nematode. However, it was not successfully maintained in storage and culture.
