Spectral hole burning study of protoporphyrin IX substituted myoglobin.

1992

Protoporphyrin IX substituted myoglobin reveals excellent hole burning properties. We investigated the frequency shift of persistent spectral holes under isotropic pressure conditions in a range from 0 to 2.4 MPa. In this range, the protein behaves like an elastic solid. The shift of the holes under pressure shows a remarkable frequency dependence from which the compressibility of the protein can be determined. The compressibility, in turn, allows for an estimation of the equilibrium volume fluctuations. Within the frame of the model used to interpret the pressure data, it is possible to determine the absorption frequency of the isolated chromophore and the associated solvent shift in the p…

Percutaneous Nephrostomy Catheter Misplacement into Inferior Vena Cava in a Patient with a Horseshoe Kidney

2020

Background: Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) is commonly indicated for upper urinary tract drainage in case of obstruction or fistula. Only a few cases of PCN catheter misplacement into the inferior vena cava (IVC) have been published. Case Presentation: We report a case of a PCN catheter misplaced into the IVC through a fistula between the urinary tract and an ipsilateral renal vein in a patient with horseshoe kidney, after bedside urgent replacement for hemorrhage and hemorrhagic shock. Conclusion: Although a nephrostomy Foley catheter can be used for adequate urinary drainage and hemostatic purposes after percutaneous nephrolithotomy, its placement should be always verified through antegra…

Interference of carbidopa and other catechols with reactions catalyzed by peroxidases

2018

Abstract Background A number of compounds, including ascorbic acid, catecholamines, flavonoids, p-diphenols and hydrazine derivatives have been reported to interfere with peroxidase-based medical diagnostic tests (Trinder reaction) but the mechanisms of these effects have not been fully elucidated. Methods Reactions of bovine myeloperoxidase with o-dianisidine, bovine lactoperoxidase with ABTS and horseradish peroxidase with 4-aminoantipyrine/phenol in the presence of carbidopa, an anti-Parkinsonian drug, and other catechols, including l -dopa, were monitored spectrophotometrically and by measuring hydrogen peroxide consumption. Results Chromophore formation in all three enzyme/substrate sy…

Low temperature optical spectroscopy of low-spin ferric hemeproteins

1996

We report the Soret absorption spectra (500-350 nm) of the cyanomet derivatives of human hemoglobin and horse myoglobin, in the temperature range 300-20 K and in two different solvents (65% v/v glycerol-water or 65% v/v ethylene glycol-water). In order to obtain information on stereodynamic properties of active site of the two hemeproteins, we perform an analysis of the band profiles within the framework of electron-vibrations coupling. This approach enables us to single out the various contributions to the spectral bandwidth, such as those arising from non-radiative decay of the excited electronic state (homogeneous broadening) and from the coupling of the electronic transition i) with hig…

Hole burning and pressure phenomena in chromoproteins

1993

Abstract We investigated the behavior of spectral holes under pressure at various frequencies within the inhomogeneous band for two proteins, namely myoglobin and horseradish peroxidase. In order to achieve narrow bandwidth hole burning, the heme chromophore was replaced by protoporphyrin IX and mesoporphyrin IX, respectively. In myoglobin, we found that the pressure induced shift of the holes varied in a strongly non-linear fashion, when the burn-frequency was tuned across the absorption band. In horseradish peroxidase the pressure shift was linear with burn-frequency but changed in a dramatic fashion upon complex formation with a substrate molecule. These observations are interpreted with…

Picturing Dorian Gray: Portrait of an Adaptation

2016

Elucidation of Carbohydrate Molecular Interaction Mechanism of Recombinant and Native ArtinM

2013

[EN] The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technique has been applied for monitoring the biorecognition of ArtinM lectins at low horseradish peroxidase glycoprotein (HRP) concentrations, using a simple kinetic model based on Langmuir isotherm in previous work.(18) The latter approach was consistent with the data at dilute conditions but it fails to explain the small differences existing in the jArtinM and rArtinM due to ligand binding concentration limit. Here we extend this analysis to differentiate sugar-binding event of recombinant (rArtinM) and native (jArtinM) ArtinM lectins beyond dilute conditions. Equivalently, functionalized quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (…

‘Not All That Is White Is Lime’-White Substances from Archaeological Burial Contexts: Analyses and Interpretations

2019

Archaeological burial contexts may include a variety of white substances, but few analyses have been published. This study reports on the physico‐chemical characterization of such residues from seven archaeological sites. It is often assumed that white materials from burial contexts are lime. Our findings demonstrate that they can be gypsum, calcite (chalk), aragonite, brushite, degraded metal, natural (gum) resins or synthetic polymer–based products. These may be present as the result of diagenetic processes, funerary practices or modern contamination. This paper provides an analytical approach for the holistic investigation of white materials encountered in burial contexts.

Reminiscing in white in Fae Myenne Ng's Bone

2018

The article focuses on the representation of whiteness in Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone (1993), in particular on how the aesthetic and the socio-historical strata of the novel intersect, how by saturating the imagery of Bone with whiteness, Ng conveys the first person Chinese American narrator’s positionality and the positionality of other Chinese American characters as members of the Chinese American community and members of broader American society. The images involving whiteness compose a kind of the palimpsest overwritten with personal and communal ethnic watermarks as well as repressed, surfacing and semi-articulated history of Leila’s family that she channels into the narrative, having engaged…

2019

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to examine the levels of endurance and neuromuscular performance variables in female horseback riders. METHODS: 52 female Finnish riders were involved (age 29.4±8.9 yrs, height 1.68±0.06 m, weight 67.5±10.0 kg), 19 show-jumping riders (SJ) and 33 eventing riders (E), riding-time minimum of 4 times/week, jumping level of minimum 1.06±0.11m. The measurements were maximal bilateral isometric leg press force (MVCLP), maximal unilateral isometric knee extension (MVCKE) and flexion forces (MVCKF), countermovement jump (CMJ), maximal isometric force of the trunk extensor and flexor muscles (MVCE, MVCF), weight distribution of the body (WD), handgrip…
