Nutritional parameters associated with prognosis in non-critically ill hospitalized covid-19 patients: the nutri-covid19 study
2021
Background & aims: To investigate the association between the parameters used in nutritional screening assessment (body mass index [BMI], unintentional weight loss [WL] and reduced food intake) and clinical outcomes in non-critically ill, hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Methods: This was a prospective multicenter real-life study carried out during the first pandemic wave in 11 Italian Hospitals. In total, 1391 patients were included. The primary end-point was a composite of in-hospital mortality or admission to ICU, whichever came first. The key secondary end-point was in-hospital mortality. Results: Multivariable models were based on 1183 patients with comple…
Identification of effective parameters for anti-inflammatory concentration in València City's wastewater using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative anal…
2019
The current literature about pharmaceutical and personal care compounds (PPCPs) focuses on identifying their concentration and toxicological risk both in surface water and in wastewater. However, the influence of urban areas (population ageing, income level, hospitals and others) has not yet been analysed. Knowing how a population (and its facilities) affects PPCPs' presence in wastewater is important to identify the conditions that are responsible for their presence. In this work, the influence of water consumption, population ageing, income level, hospitals and nursing homes on the anti-inflammatory concentration have been analysed. To fill the gap between the quantitative data on PPCPs' …
Position Statement on Breastfeeding from the Italian Pediatric Societies
2015
The 2015 Position Statement on Breastfeeding of The Italian Pediatric Societies (SIP, SIN, SICupp, SIGENP) recognizes breastfeeding as an healthy behaviour with many short and long term benefits for both mother and infant. While protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding, neonatologists and pediatricians need specific knowledge, skills and a positive attitude toward breastfeeding. In Maternity Hospitals and in Neonatal Units, appropriate organizative interventions should be applied in order to facilitate the beginning of breastfeeding and the use of mother’s/human milk. The Italian Pediatric Societies indicate the desiderable goal of around 6 months exclusive breastfeeding if the in…
Newborns with an impairment: discourses of hospital staff.
2007
The birth of a baby with an impairment goes against dominant cultural ideals about a happy event. Therefore, the interaction between professionals and parents is particularly important, from the hospital maternity ward to the home. In this article, the author examines both the representations of neonatal impairments constructed by professionals and the consequent subject positions for these babies with impairments. The study is based on interview data collected among 19 staff members of one Finnish county hospital. The author analyzed the data by means of qualitative discourse analysis and concludes that it would be important for health care professionals to provide many-sided elements for…
Hospital Reform in Palermo
2023
2012
The study presented here is the conclusion of an inventory about hospitals having existed on the territory of some dioceses (Autun, Auxerre, Chalon-sur-Saône, Nevers and the south of that of Langres diocese) between XIIth and XVth centuries. Based on the data collected, an atlas of assistance and a directory of sources on medieval hospitals of the study area has been made. The compiled informations proved to be very different but also very heterogeneous. Nevertheless, reflexions were conducted about the characteristics of these hospitals and their relationships with their economic, religious, political and social environments. It revolves around three parts dealing by turns the influence of…
Tourism, Poverty Reduction and the Political Economy: Egyptian Perspectives on Tourism's Economic Benefits in a Semi-RentierState
2006
Abstract Tourism's potential as a tool for poverty reduction in developing countries is still part of an endless controversy. This paper argues that one of the main problems of the debate is rooted in a missing nexus between micro- and macro-perspectives. The result is a lack of an adequate consideration of local socio-political power structures and their influence on development issues. Macro-perspective paradigms – like dependency or neoclassic theory – tend to argue from a Euro-centric perspective and largely ignore local political conditions. On the other hand, micro-perspectives – like the alternative development paradigm – emphasize local conditions, but tend to underestimate superior…
Mobility in and of the Empire: A Colonialist History of Mobility
2021
Mobility is freedom. Freedom is power. Those who wield control over the mobility of others control their freedom. The global reach of this control was first evident in the history of colonialism. The empire both incentivized and restricted travel, depending upon who aligned with the colonial vision of the world. Unfreedom is a situation when there is no evident bondage but there is still no exercise of freedom. Fast forward from the times of the European empires, the contemporary forms of colonialism institutionalized this. Television shows, social media, and the internet made people unfree to aspirations that would truly liberate them but rather glued them to shallow pursuits. In this intr…
