Abstract Aims We investigated trends in incidence, case fatality rate, patient characteristics and adverse inhospital events of patients hospitalised for heart failure in Germany. Methods and results The German nationwide inpatient sample (2005–2016) was used for this analysis. Patients hospitalised due to heart failure were selected for analysis. Temporal trends in the incidence of hospitalisations, case fatality rate and treatments were analysed and predictors of inhospital death were identified. We evaluated two composite risk scores, (Heart Failure Survival Score, HFSS; German Transplant Society Score, GTSS), and depression as predictors of mortality and competing waiting-list outcomes [high-urgency transplantation (HU-HTx), elective transplantation, delisting because of clinical improvement] in 318 heart transplant (HTx) candidates (18% women; aged 53 ± 11 years) from 17 hospitals and newly registered with Eurotransplant. Hospital-acquired hepatitis B (HBV) and C virus (HCV) infections continue to occur despite increased awareness of this problem among the medical community. One hundred six patients were infected in a haematology oncology ward for children, over the time period 1996 to 2000. Serum samples from 45 such patients and 3 from infected medical personnel were used for nucleic acid amplification.
