Generalized Linear Model (GLM) framework for the association of host variables and viral strains with liver fibrosis in HCV/HIV coinfected patients
2012
Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the main cause of advanced and end-stage liver disease world-wide, and an important factor of morbidity and mortality in Human Immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) co-infected individuals. Whereas the genetic variability of HCV has been studied extensively in monoinfected patients, comprehensive analyses of both patient and virus characteristics are still scarce in HCV/HIV co-infection. In order to find correlates for liver damage, we sought to analyze demographic, epidemiological and clinical features of HCV/HIV co-infected patients along with the genetic makeup of HCV (viral subtypes and lineage studied by nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic ana…
The effects of prebiotics on microbial dysbiosis, butyrate production and immunity in HIV-infected subjects
2017
Altered interactions between the gut mucosa and bacteria during HIV infection seem to contribute to chronic immune dysfunction. A deeper understanding of how nutritional interventions could ameliorate gut dysbiosis is needed. Forty-four subjects, including 12 HIV+ viremic untreated (VU) patients, 23 antiretroviral therapy-treated (ART(+)) virally suppressed patients (15 immunological responders and 8 non-responders) and 9 HIV- controls (HIV-), were blindly randomized to receive either prebiotics (scGOS/lcFOS/glutamine) or placebo (34/10) over 6 weeks in this pilot study. We assessed fecal microbiota composition using deep 16S rRNA gene sequencing and several immunological and genetic marker…

Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells as part of therapy for chronic graft-versus-host disease: A phase I/II study
2017
Abstract Background aims Despite the efficacy of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), the procedure is still associated with high toxicity in patients with refractory graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are a new mode of therapy in the context of allo-HSCT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of the use of adipose tissue–derived MSCs (AT-MSCs) in patients with chronic GvHD. Methods Fourteen patients with moderate (n = 7) or severe (n = 7) chronic GvHD received 1 × 106/kg (group A, n = 9) or 3 × 106/kg (group B, n = 5) AT-MSCs with cyclosporine and prednisone as first-line therapy. Results Ten of the…

Raising Children with Poor School Performance: Parenting Styles and Short- and Long-Term Consequences for Adolescent and Adult Development.
2019
This study examines the correlates of authoritative (warmth and strictness), indulgent (warmth but not strictness), authoritarian (strictness but not warmth), and neglectful (neither warmth nor strictness) parenting with short- and long-term socialization outcomes in adolescents and adults, with and without poor school performance during adolescence. Short- and long-term socialization outcomes were captured by multidimensional self-esteem (academic/professional, emotional, and family), psychological maturity (self-competence, social competence, and empathy), and emotional maladjustment (nervousness, emotional instability, and hostility). Participants (1195 female and 874 male) consisted of …
Addition of Low-Dose Fluvoxamine to Low-Dose Clozapine Monotherapy in Schizophrenia: Drug Monitoring and Tolerability Data from a Prospective Clinica…
1999
Combining fluvoxamine and clozapine may be a strategy to improve therapeutic effects on negative symptoms in schizophrenic patients. Fluvoxamine, however, markedly inhibits the metabolism of clozapine, and hazardous side effects may result. This study prospectively investigated the safety and tolerability of an add-on therapy with fluvoxamine to a clozapine monotherapy in schizophrenic patients. Sixteen schizophrenic patients received 50 mg fluvoxamine as a comedication after having reached steady-state conditions under clozapine monotherapy. Patients were monitored for subjective adverse events, laboratory parameters, EEG and ECG recordings, orthostatic hypotension and their psychopatholog…
Raising Spanish Children With an Antisocial Tendency: Do We Know What the Optimal Parenting Style Is?
2018
Families can play an essential role in preventing violent and antisocial behaviors, which are considered a significant public health issue. However, some studies argue that most children are antisocial only during adolescence, and even teenagers can mimic antisocial behavior in ways that are normative and well-adjusted. This study analyzed patterns of competence and adjustment in young adults with and without an antisocial tendency during adolescence from authoritative (characterized by warmth and strictness), authoritarian (strictness but not warmth), indulgent (warmth but not strictness), and neglectful (neither warmth nor strictness) families. Emergent research has indicated that in a E…
Effect of antiviral treatment and host susceptibility on positive selection in hepatitis C virus (HCV).
2007
Abstract We have conducted a large sequence study of the E1–E2 and NS5A regions of the HCV, subtypes 1a and b, both in patients previously treated with interferon, and untreated patients, who later responded, or not, to a combination therapy based on interferon plus ribavirin. We have examined the role played by the number of positively selected sites on disease progression and its relationship with several variables such as patients’ age, sex and their risk of acquiring the disease. We have detected three groups of patients that respond or not to combination therapy: responders of intermediate age, older non-responders and young non-responders, they possess an increasing average number of …
Diagnosis and grading of acute graft-versus-host disease in endoscopic biopsy series throughout the upper and lower intestine in patients after allog…
2019
Intestinal graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a potentially life-threatening condition after allogenic hematological stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT). Although efforts have been made to determine the best sites for endoscopic biopsies, an approach involving all accessible anatomical regions is lacking. We investigated 22 complete biopsy series, each comprising biopsies from 10 different sites of the upper and lower intestine from 21 patients. The majority of biopsies investigated revealed histological signs of acute GvHD. The highest incidence and most advanced grades of acute GvHD were found in the right colon and terminal ileum. We detected significant correlations between crypt or g…
