Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of a plant-wide model for carbon and energy footprint of wastewater treatment plants

2014

This paper presents the sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of a mathematical model for Greenhouse gas (GHG) and energy consumption assessment from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The model is able to simultaneously describe the main biological and physical-chemical processes in a WWTP. Specifically, the mathematical model includes the main processes of the water and sludge lines influencing the methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Further, the process energy demand and the energy recovery are also taken into account. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the key factors and sources of uncertainty influencing GHG emissions from WWTP at a pla…

Enhanced Sewage Sludge Drying with a Modified Solar Greenhouse

2022

This work reports the results obtained with an innovative configuration of a closed-static solar greenhouse for sludge drying. The novelty of the solar greenhouse configuration consisted in using a forced ventilation system to provide hot air for sludge drying and the utilization of solar irradiation for energy supply. Wet sewage sludge (97% humidity) was successfully dried up to a residual humidity close to 5% after 25 days during wintertime. The increase of the airflow rate supplied under the sludge bed improved the sludge drying rate. Moreover, the fraction of volatile suspended solids decreased from 70% to 41% after 13 days, indicating that air supply promoted the simultaneous stabiliza…

Rolling resistance and traffic delay impact on a road pavement life cycle carbon footprint analysis

2017

The application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to road pavements has been continuously evolving and improving over the last years, however there are several limitations and uncertainties in the introduction of some components in the framework, such as road pavement rolling resistance—in terms of pavement surface properties—and traffic delay during maintenance activities. This paper analyses the influence of methodological assumptions and the model used to estimate the increased emissions for traffic delay and road pavement rolling resistance on the results of an LCA. The Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions related to these two phases of a pavement LCA will be calculated for a UK case study, us…

SISTEMI PASSIVI PER L’INDOOR COMFORT: LA GESTIONE DELLE SERRE SOLARI IN REGIME ESTIVO

2019

Public wash-houses in the ninetheenth and twentieth centuries. Architectural solutions for social hygiene in Italy and Portugal

2019

From the XIX century, the new studies and discoveries in medicine, biology, and infectious diseases produced a great impact not only in people life, but also in construction. The “hygienist” engineer, as a new professional figure, spread out with the aim of designing “health” buildings according to the novel hygienic standards, typologies and functions, materials and technologies. Among the various typologies, the public wash-houses played an important role in guarantying the personal and public hygiene and preventing the diffusion of epidemics throughout the urban environment. This paper analyses the public wash-houses that, despite their architectural simplicity, played an extremely impor…

2020

The domestic environment, as a space in continuous evolution, is called today to respond to some socio-cultural transformations, largely due to pressing technological innovations, which have profoundly changed the relationships between people and between them and the space of the house. These transformations redesign private spaces with a massive encroachment of the public sphere into the private one and vice versa, creating large areas of permeability in the confines of the house. The article analyzes some aspects of this phenomenon, intersecting the disciplinary contribution of design with the architectural and interior design, through some contemporary case studies.

Oceano Mediterraneo : cardboard and plaster architectures

2016

Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E UrbanaTaking into account some salient aspects of the conception production and opposition to the Toronto Quayside project by Sidewalk labs the article discusses the influence of urban data-digital infrastructures on the architectural design of the house and the neighbourhood. The extension of remote control on the practices of everyday life in the domestic space emphasized by the daily Covid 19 pandemic constitutes a useful advertising reference and an accelerator for the planetary oligopolists of urban data such as Alphabet. The fusion of the new emblems of techno-emancipation and sustainability in experimental hypotheses that can be built both in whole or in parts draws a new horizon in which the domestic space generates a technological profit and the inhabitants are transformed into producers. From a historical perspective our reality eclipses the idea of technology as an anonymous contribution to collective progress demonstrated by Giedion in Mechanization takes command and subverts the allegorical value assigned by the Architecture of the Seventies to the relational utopias of the Web Stem and Cluster.

Pensare in bianco. Progettare in bianco

2018
